On 16th December 2025, NANA Girls & Women Empowerment Initiative, in collaboration with consortium partners Centre for Well-being and Integrated Nutrition Solutions (C-WINS) and Civil Society in Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN), successfully held the Strategic Alignment and Inception Meeting for the Integrated Child Survival Advocacy at the Last Mile (ICSA) Project in Abuja, supported by the Gates Foundation.
The Integrated Child Survival Advocacy at the Last Mile (ICSA) Project, launched in late 2025, is a game-changer led by a consortium of civil society organizations aiming to slash child mortality in underserved communities, focusing on integrating primary healthcare and advocacy to reach kids in the "last mile"โthose remote areas often missed by health systems.
The projectโs main goals and objectives are to target 145 LGAs across Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, and Sokoto States (Osun as comparator):
- Ending Preventable Deaths: Aiming to reduce under-five mortality to 25 or fewer deaths per 1,000 live births by 2030, in line with SDG 3.2.
- Reaching the Last Mile: Targeting the "unreached" and "zero-dose" children who lack access to life-saving vaccines and basic treatments.
- Integrated Service Delivery: Strengthening Primary Health Care (PHC) to address the leading causes of death in children aged 1โ59 months: pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria.
- Advocacy and Accountability:Galvanizing national and sub-national leadership to increase domestic health financing and ensure high-quality, people-centered pediatric care.
Focus Areas:
ICSA is an advocacy-led initiative translating policies like BHCPF 2.0, SWAp, MAMII, and HOPE-PHC into measurable impact at the last mile.
- Strengthen LGA leadership and accountability
- Improve PHC financing and integration
- Promote data-driven advocacy
- Reinforce community engagement and accountability
Key stakeholders from the Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare, NPHCDA, state institutions, ALGON, Nigeria Governorsโ Forum, development partners, technical agencies, and civil society organizations attended to strengthen alignment, co-creation, and coordination for effective project implementation.
NANA, as a women-led and community-focused organization, emphasized the importance of community ownership of advocacy, agreeing to operationalize Local Health Area Advocacy Teams (LHAATs) and leverage Ward Development Committees (WDCs) to amplify community voices and strengthen accountability at the LGA level.
Key Next Steps:
- Finalize priority LGAs
- Commence baseline assessments
- Operationalize LHAATs
- Develop a clear action plan with defined roles and timelines
NANA, together with her partners, remains committed to collaborative, evidence-driven advocacy for accountable, integrated, and community-responsive PHC systemsโensuring no woman or child is left behind at the last mile!
