๐ŸŒŸ NANA Girls and Women Empowerment Initiative officially kicked off the Integrated Child Survival Advocacy at the Last Mile (ICSA) Project with its inception meeting โ€” a major step toward improving child survival in Nigeria! ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

Supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and led by Community-Wide Initiatives for Development (C-WINS), in partnership with NANA Girls and Women Empowerment Initiative and ACOMIN, this project aims to reach every child with life-saving immunization and malaria services by 2027.

๐ŸŽฏ Key Goals:
- Advocate for at least $1 per child for health financing
- Strengthen integrated primary health care systems
- Empower communities to lead accountability and demand for health services
- Use digital tools (CommCare, Emvolio) to track performance and reach zero-dose children

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Faruk U Abubakar, Honourable Commissioner for Health, Sokoto State, and brought together key stakeholders โ€” from government officials and UNICEF to local Ward Development Committees and development partners.

๐Ÿ“ICSA will be implemented in Sokoto, Kebbi, Kaduna, Kano, and Katsina States, with NANA leading efforts in Sokoto and Kebbi.

๐Ÿ’ช Together, weโ€™re building stronger health systems and making sure no child is left behind โ€” especially at the last mile*.

On 16th December 2025, NANA Girls & Women Empowerment Initiative, in collaboration with consortium partners Centre for Well-being and Integrated Nutrition Solutions (C-WINS) and Civil Society in Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN), successfully held the Strategic Alignment and Inception Meeting for the Integrated Child Survival Advocacy at the Last Mile (ICSA) Project in Abuja, supported by the Gates Foundation.

The Integrated Child Survival Advocacy at the Last Mile (ICSA) Project, launched in late 2025, is a game-changer led by a consortium of civil society organizations aiming to slash child mortality in underserved communities, focusing on integrating primary healthcare and advocacy to reach kids in the "last mile"โ€”those remote areas often missed by health systems.

The projectโ€™s main goals and objectives are to target 145 LGAs across Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, and Sokoto States (Osun as comparator):
- Ending Preventable Deaths: Aiming to reduce under-five mortality to 25 or fewer deaths per 1,000 live births by 2030, in line with SDG 3.2.
- Reaching the Last Mile: Targeting the "unreached" and "zero-dose" children who lack access to life-saving vaccines and basic treatments.
- Integrated Service Delivery: Strengthening Primary Health Care (PHC) to address the leading causes of death in children aged 1โ€“59 months: pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria.
- Advocacy and Accountability:Galvanizing national and sub-national leadership to increase domestic health financing and ensure high-quality, people-centered pediatric care.

Focus Areas:
ICSA is an advocacy-led initiative translating policies like BHCPF 2.0, SWAp, MAMII, and HOPE-PHC into measurable impact at the last mile.
- Strengthen LGA leadership and accountability
- Improve PHC financing and integration
- Promote data-driven advocacy
- Reinforce community engagement and accountability

Key stakeholders from the Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare, NPHCDA, state institutions, ALGON, Nigeria Governorsโ€™ Forum, development partners, technical agencies, and civil society organizations attended to strengthen alignment, co-creation, and coordination for effective project implementation.

NANA, as a women-led and community-focused organization, emphasized the importance of community ownership of advocacy, agreeing to operationalize Local Health Area Advocacy Teams (LHAATs) and leverage Ward Development Committees (WDCs) to amplify community voices and strengthen accountability at the LGA level.

Key Next Steps:
- Finalize priority LGAs
- Commence baseline assessments
- Operationalize LHAATs
- Develop a clear action plan with defined roles and timelines

NANA, together with her partners, remains committed to collaborative, evidence-driven advocacy for accountable, integrated, and community-responsive PHC systemsโ€”ensuring no woman or child is left behind at the last mile!

Genderโ€‘based violence remains a significant concern in Kebbi State and Sokoto State.
According to Nationonline Agencyโ€™s 2024 data report, 133 Nigerian women and girls were killed due to GBV between January and December 2024.

Nana Girls and Women Empowerment Initiatives, through her efforts to combat GBV in Kebbi and Sokoto, has initiated several activities with UNICEF and the WVL project to fight these abuses, especially among women and girls.

Key factors contributing to GBV:
- Poverty
- Low education status
- Legislative actions
- Lack of parental support
- Lack of adequate funds to address GBV
- Low legal actions
- Hawking among others.

NANAโ€™s activities to Fight GBV:

- Campaigns and sensitisation against exploitation and abuse
- Coalition of CBOs in Kebbi State, which led to the creation of the VAPP Law in the state
- Advocacy visits to government officials
- Partnerships with ministries (Women Affairs, Education, Health, Youth, etc.) to fight GBV
- Creation of Schoolโ€‘Related Genderโ€‘Based Violence (SRGBV) programmes in 16 secondary schools in Kebbi State, making learning environments safer for girls
- Strong collaboration with security agencies, traditional and religious leaders
- Strengthening communityโ€‘based organisations to identify, respond to, and report GBV cases
- Uniting and strengthening community structures in rural areas
- Providing economic empowerment to vulnerable victims โ€“ over 1,500 rural girls trained in tailoring, knitting, cosmetics, snack & drink processing, animal farming, poultry, salon work, etc.
- Creating savings and loan associations for women and girls in rural areas
- Safeโ€‘space programmes that give rural girls tools to protect themselves and speak out
- Enrolling over 500 girls back into school in rural areas

Through her initiative *NANAโ€™s Girls and Women Empowerment Initiatives* have tackled 108 GBV cases, and the some of the perpetrators are now in prison.

Together we can end GBV!
