“The day we started using it, I said, ‘Oh my God, maybe we have been proclaiming babies dead before fully exploring all resuscitation options.’”

For Maimuna Bitrus Agyigra, Head of the Labour Room at Gwange PHC in Borno State, the Safer Births Bundle of Care Bundle - a combination of clinical innovations, training innovations, sustainability measures, and continuous quality improvement changed more than a process; they changed perspectives.

Today, her team is better equipped to respond, act quickly, and give every newborn a fighting chance at life.

Sometimes, the right tools make all the difference.

Displaced by conflict, Balkisu and her family sought refuge in the GGSS camp in Monguno, northeast Nigeria - where NCA, with funding support from the Government of , provided her with dignity kits and cash assistance. This support helped restore comfort and dignity while enabling her daughter to continue her education, gain skills, and receive awareness on the risks of early and forced marriage.

Together, we can reach more families like Balkisu’s.

The SASA! Together approach, implemented by Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) in collaboration with local partners, is a community mobilization model designed to end violence against women by transforming harmful social norms through key strategies such as local activism, community leadership, and institutional strengthening. SASA! Together stands for Start, Awareness, Support, and Action.
Each phase represents a gradual shift in how communities understand and use power in relationships, moving from awareness to collective action to address abuse of power.

Through this phased approach, communities are encouraged to reflect on power, relationships, and responsibility, and to see violence not as an isolated issue but as something that can be changed through collective effort and sustained engagement.

As one of the Community Leaders for SASA! Together in Pulka Camp 1, Saleh Mohammed, shared:

“SASA! Together helped me see our community like a house with cracks that had been ignored for a long time. The Start Phase helped us notice the cracks, the Awareness Phase helped us understand the damage they could cause, and now the Support Phase has empowered us to work together as a community to repair and strengthen the foundation by addressing Violence Against Women.”

This reflection captures the heart of SASA! Together as an NCA-supported initiative. It is about more than awareness. It is about building confidence, shared responsibility, and collective action needed to prevent violence against women and create lasting change in communities.

In Pulka, Gwoza, 70 women and girls, most of them internally displaced, have just completed a four-month livelihood training and support by the NCA with funding from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).

For many of them, this is a fresh start. Over the past months, they learned practical skills like making reusable sanitary pads, baking, liquid soap, and pasta, skills they can use right away to earn an income.

At graduation, each participant received a start-up kit, including sewing machines and materials for producing reusable sanitary pads. These are tools they can take straight into their homes and communities to begin rebuilding their livelihoods.

Behind each kit is a story of resilience, women choosing to move forward, support their families, and regain a sense of stability after displacement.

With funding support from the Government of Norway, we donated training mannequins and essential tools to strengthen two new SBBC-supported facilities, Maryam Abacha Women and Children Hospital and Mohammed Shuwa Memorial Hospital, Maiduguri as part of the expansion of SBBC and ongoing efforts to improve care for mothers and newborns.

Each training corner is equipped with practical tools like the NeoBeat Newborn Heart Rate Meter, MamaNatalie Simulation Trainer, Moyo Fetal Heart Rate Monitor, Upright Bag and Mask, Penguin Suction Device and MamaBathie.

These tools support both hands-on practice and real-time use in delivery rooms, helping health workers respond quickly and confidently when it matters most.

Better prepared teams. Safer births.

The UNFPA Nigeria brought together Gender Based Violence (GBV) partners across Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe for three days of review, learning, and forward planning at Ibom Resort, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

From reviewing the GBV coordination core functions, strengthening the GBV Sector Strategy, and advancing GBV Information Management Systems, to shaping the GBV Sub-Sector Strategy, Localization Strategy, and 2026 Workplan, the sessions were impactful, practical, and action-driven.

As a key GBV implementing partner in the Area of Responsibility (AoR), Norwegian Church Aid Nigeria - NCA, a planning committee member of the Strategic Review Meeting, actively contributed to the discussions, bringing field insights, community perspectives, and a strong commitment to inclusive, survivor centered programming.

The NCA also co-facilitated engagement moments, including the team-building session, reinforcing collaboration across partners.

The review of SOPs across the three states and the adoption of clear action points mark an important step toward more coordinated, accountable, and impactful GBV response.
