----------
A NEW STANDARD FOR OGONI: WHERE MERIT, NOT INFLUENCE, DETERMINES SUCCESS
----------

First, we thank God Almighty for granting us the wisdom and courage to successfully deliver the assignment entrusted to us by Chief Lesi Maol, an opportunity to serve Ogoni at a defining moment.

When the OES Grant Selection Committee was constituted, expectations were high, and the task was daunting. As a new committee, we had to build a credible system from the ground up: policies, processes, and structures, while ensuring that only deserving applicants emerged as beneficiaries who would truly impact Ogoniland.

From the very beginning, we made a deliberate choice: the process must be strictly merit-based, anchored on fairness, transparency, equal opportunity, and a level playing field.

To bring these principles to life, we started with discipline and sacrifice. Committee members and their immediate families were disqualified from applying. Members of the Board of Trustees were also excluded. Eligibility was limited to participants of the 2025 Summit, ensuring that commitment preceded opportunity.

With this foundation, we designed a system that removed human interference. Through strict segregation of duties, no individual could alter outcomes. Not even the Chairman could intervene without it being visible. Every step was structured to eliminate political, emotional, or personal bias.

The process itself was rigorous and objective. Applicants passed through multiple stages of screening, appearing before independent judges who scored them individually, without consultation, based strictly on predefined criteria.

Roles were clearly separated: those who verified applications could not serve as judges, and those who collated scores had no interaction with applicants. Final selection was based strictly on agreed cut-off points.

To ensure fairness, shortlisted candidates underwent training before the final stage, giving all applicants equal knowledge and preparation.

At the final stage, 50% of the judges were entirely new and unknown to the applicants. These judges were highly distinguished experts: a Doctor in Banking and Finance, a Doctor in Entrepreneurship, an Associate Professor in Economics, and a Professor of Economics, bringing fresh objectivity, depth, and credibility to the process.

During the final collation of scores, the process was further strengthened. The individual responsible for data input handed over all judges’ score sheets for independent cross-checking, ensuring that every score matched the recorded data and guaranteeing accuracy, completeness, and integrity.

What we achieved was simple but powerful: a system where success depends not on who you know, but on what you can demonstrate.

The strength of this system became evident in a remarkable moment. A female applicant who had just delivered a baby reached out from her maternity bed, with her newborn beside her, asking when she could appear before the panel.

That level of commitment reflected a deeper truth: people trusted the process because it was fair.

By God’s grace, we have established a new culture in Ogoni, one that proves fairness is possible, transparency is achievable, and merit can prevail over influence. It is a standard that Rivers State, and indeed Nigeria, can learn from.

This is more than a grant selection process. It is a new standard, and it is here to stay.

I am privileged to work with a strong and committed team: Dr. Elvis Ikoma, Engr. Tudor Miiko, Ndume Green, and the support team: Paul Kue, Borgbara Queen Mbelabari, Dorka Jimmy-Ngbo, as well as all the applicants who trusted and engaged with the process.

Signed:

BEING TEXT OF SPEECH PRESENTED BY CHIEF LESI MAOL, THE CONVENER, AT THE FIRST OGONI ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT GRANT AWARD CEREMONY AT WIIYAKARA, 28TH MARCH 2026.

We are gathered here today once again to make history, to stimulate and awaken our people from the mindset of survival, weakness, and deprivation that many of us still carry. We must move beyond this way of thinking and embrace the reality that we are no longer in the state of deprivation. We are now conscious, capable, and ready to stand among our peers both nationally and globally, to compete and achieve success in business and in various life adventure.

Capital is not the primary reason for business or entrepreneurial success. The key factor is the individual driving the business and the mindset. The mind is the engine room of every enterprise, and human mind is the first important factor, not capital (funds as speculated by us). Unfortunately, many people still believe that money is the most important requirement to start or run a business.

In reality, it is the human factor, a sound, smart and intelligent mind—that is the most critical ingredient required for any successful business. It is your ideas and thoughts that bring out your skills and creativity when the need arises.

We live in a world where no one waits for anyone, and time waits for no one. It is up to you to make use of the time freely given to you, to maximize the opportunities that come your way. Opportunities come to everyone in several ways and at different times in life, but many fail to recognize them when they appear. As a result, they feel less privileged, oppressed, or being denied their rights.

However, our past heroes have given us enough awareness to reset our minds as Ogoni people that we should take our destiny in our hands by being proactive and take necessary required action to be outstanding among our peers. We must understand that we are not just victims of oppression, but people who can transform adversity and deprivation into opportunities. By learning, developing ourselves, and measuring up with our peers globally, we can stand for our rights and make meaningful progress in life in various enterprises.

Today, we are witnessing a new dawn, a return to our original nature of brotherhood and love. Love has always been our trademark as good people of Ogoni. From inception, hospitality and generosity have been part of our identity, our DNA. It was once common knowledge in our history that, no one went to bed hungry in Ogoniland because we shared what we had and helped each other.

In the past, you could return late from the farm and still receive food from a neighbor or relative. If there was a misunderstanding at home, you could go to your uncle’s or aunt’s house, or even another village and be welcomed, fed, and cared for. Even non-relatives would show concern, take you in, and ensure your well-being before returning you safely to your family.

This same spirit of love extended to the cities. If you spoke your language and found yourself stranded, you could find shelter, food, and even transport assistance from our people anywhere in the world.

But today, things have changed. Many people are afraid to open their doors due to fear of crime and a growing lack of trust. Sadly, this is because we have gradually allowed our values and character to decline. Love has diminished, and we must take responsibility to restore it.

It is this lost spirit of unity and love that I am trying to revive today. I cannot do it alone, we can only achieve it together. If we all commit from today to change our attitudes and treat one another with genuine care, that original love will return, and we will once again support each other and grow together.

I am not the richest person in our land, but wealth is not defined only by material possessions. My goal is to help us return and restore our true identity as a people known for hospitality, respect, and good character. This is why we were once called Ogoni pure-pure, because our hearts, actions, and character reflected purity at every level.

My Brothers and Sisters, let us return to our original nature of showing love, kindness, and care for one another.

Today, we are here to demonstrate love, in accordance with our values and even as taught in the Bible. Those who receive support today should also extend help to others, thereby creating a chain reaction of kindness. In this way, our land will rise again and become known for positive stories rather than negative ones. Let us come together to create good news as a people.

Congratulations to all Beneficiaries today, knowing that you are now Ambassadors of Love and vanguards of change for a new Ogoni of our dream.

We will continue this initiative every year God willing. We also welcome partners and collaborators of goodwill to join us in this mission. Let us keep doing good work, uplifting our people, and spreading happiness.

God bless you all, and once again, congratulations to all beneficiaries.

Thanks and God bless you.

OES RECOVERABLE GRANT 2026: FINAL PITCH STAGE CONCLUDES AS COMMITTEE BEGINS SCORES COLLATION

The OES Recoverable Grant Committee has concluded the final stage of the selection process for the maiden edition of the Grant.

This stage, which provided applicants the opportunity to pitch their business ideas before panels of judges, was primarily conducted between Tuesday, 3rd March and Wednesday, 4th March 2026.

To ensure a fair and credible process, the Selection Committee engaged external judges who are notable professionals and entrepreneurs across various fields. These included Dr. Dumbor Cornelius Bulo, Dr. Barisi Daniel, Prof. Allwell Nteegah, and Assoc. Prof. Leelee Deekor, among others.

Members of the Committee also formed part of the judging panel. They included the Chairman, Dr. Leesi Gabriel Gborogbosi, Engr. Tudor Mikko, Mr. Ndume Green, and Dr. Elvis Lebura Ikoma.

In total, 141 applicants pitched their business ideas before the panels over the two days. Applicants in the Micro Business and Existing Business categories presented their pitches individually, while those in the Entrepreneurs Category presented their ideas in groups.

In line with the Committee’s policy of inclusiveness and fairness, applicants who were genuinely unable to attend on the originally scheduled dates, but who had notified the Committee in advance of their constraints, were given another opportunity to pitch. Consequently, a hybrid panel session was organized on Friday, 6th March 2026 to accommodate such applicants. This group included an applicant who had recently given birth and requested a virtual audience.

The Committee is currently in the process of collating and reviewing the scores submitted by the judges through their score sheets. It should be noted that each panel consisted of a minimum of two judges, ensuring balanced evaluation.

Upon completion of the collation process, cut-off marks will be determined for each category, based on the overall performance of applicants within those categories and the quota allocated to each.

The winners will be announced in the coming days. However, it is important to note that being shortlisted as the owner of a winning pitch does not automatically guarantee final beneficiary status. Follow-up verification exercises will be conducted to confirm the claims made in the proposals and executive summaries submitted by applicants.

Where any claim is found to be false or misleading, the concerned applicant will be automatically disqualified, and the next highest-scoring applicant, whose claims are successfully verified, will be selected as a replacement.

Thank you.
