Strengthening the Implementation of VAPP Law for the Reduction of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence: Lessons from Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD)

The South-South SGBV Info Hub has been curating learning sessions among SGBV focal stakeholders across the South-South region. These sessions target both State and Non-state actors to strengthen the quality of SGBV work and to amplify regional advocacy to end Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.
This session focuses on the operationalisation of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Law), a critical priority for the South-South region and for all parts of Nigeria where the law has been domesticated and passed.
Participants will gain practical insights and lessons from CEHRD’s experience in strengthening implementation to reduce Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

Do you remember our Art Competition Open to 3 Junior Secondary School Students in Rivers State?

It is still on going. We are planning for the exhibition in September when school resumes and we are still looking for Sponsors and Partners.

The Theme Statement for the Competition is
"Through My Eyes: Nature, Growth, and Tomorrow"
This theme invites young artists to explore their relationship with the natural world — how it shapes their sense of self, community, and future. Students are encouraged to interpret nature not just as scenery, but as a metaphor for growth, resilience, and possibility.

Sub-themes that will guide entries:
🌱 Growth — trees, seeds, seasons as symbols of personal and community development

A New Chapter for Affiong and Her Children

For three years, Affiong lived with the weight of violence.
She was afraid. Providing for her twin children was a challenge. And without a reliable source of income, building a safer and more stable life felt almost impossible.

After reporting her case to the GADA Help Desk in Calabar, Affiong received psychosocial and legal support. But the support did not stop there. She was also provided economic empowerment and received continued follow-up as she worked towards rebuilding her life.
Six months later, the difference was more than visible. Affiong had become economically independent. She had a safer home. And perhaps most importantly, she had regained something violence had taken from her: a sense of peace and hope for the future of her children.

Affiong’s journey reminds us that responding to GBV is not only about addressing violence. It is about helping survivors reclaim their safety, dignity, confidence and future.

There are many more people who need that chance.
If you or someone you know is experiencing gender-based violence, speaking up can be the first step towards safety and support. Together, we can make support accessible.

UNEP-WCMC is heading to in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia 🇲🇳

The 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will unite Member States, the UN system, the scientific and business community, civil society, youth, women and Indigenous Peoples and local communities. Over two weeks, the conference will deepen global collaboration on land restoration, drought resilience, rangelands, water and food systems.

Our key focus areas include:
🔸Cooperation, coordination and synergies, including delivery through the Bern Process.
🔸Private sector engagement and mobilizing sustainable finance solutions, including sharing findings from the IPBES Business and Biodiversity Assessment at the Business4Land forum.
🔸Coordination of UNCCD Science-Policy Interface with other science-policy panels.
🔸Connections between the UNCCD and CBD, including, on national reporting cycles and inclusive engagement of the whole of society, particularly women, indigenous peoples and local communities.
