Sustaining Voices for Fair & Progressive Taxation in Rivers State.

As a member of the Rivers State Tax Justice and Governance Platform, CHHELD participated in the public unveiling of the Power of Voices Partnerships โ€“ Fair for All Project Report (2021โ€“2025), promoting fair and progressive taxation in Rivers State.

The report documents how sustained CSO collaboration, research, capacity building, advocacy, and media engagement helped amplify the voices of women, youth, persons with disabilities in the informal sector of the economy, who are disproportionately affected by illegal and multiple taxation.

Key outcomes highlighted include:
โœ”๏ธ Strengthened partnerships with with non-state actors such as Chartered Institute of Taxation, Society of Women in Taxation (SWIT), National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) etc
โœ”๏ธ Increased participation of women, youth, and PWDs in fiscal policy dialogue
โœ”๏ธ Community-driven Tax-for-Service initiatives, improving improving sanitation and hygiene around Rumuokuta market in Obio Akpor LGA
โœ”๏ธ Enhanced advocacy capacity of members with other social actors within the tax ecosystem, for advancing the platform's mandates to end illegal and multiple taxation
โœ”๏ธ The Rivers State Tax Justice and Governance Platform emerged as a leader of the tax movement in the Niger Delta region, having to coordinate a regional Technical Working Group on tax reforms and advocacy

When civil society acts collectively,
Change becomes possible.

This project was done with support from the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and funded by Oxfam.

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE 2025
Theme: โ€œUnite to End Digital Violence Against Women and Girlsโ€

At CHHELD, we are committed to ensuring that every woman and girl feels safe โ€” both offline and online.

Through our ALAMH Project, we have taken the message directly into communities in Khana LGA, raising strong awareness against Gender-Based Violence, encouraging them to speak up, report abuse, and support survivors.

As digital technology grows, so do the risks of online harassment, cyberbullying, hate speech, and threats that silence voices targeted at women and girls.
Digital spaces should be a place for expression, innovation, connection โ€” not fear.

This 16 Days, we unite:
๐Ÿงก To protect women and girls.
๐Ÿงก To make the digital world safe for all.
๐Ÿงก To end GBV!

CHHELD joined partners under the Rivers State Tax Justice and Governance Platform for a productive Peer Review Session on the Power of Voices Partnership โ€“ Fair for All Project (2021โ€“2025) Report, funded by Oxfam in Nigeria and facilitated by CISLAC.

The session provided an opportunity to reflect on five years of collaboration, learning, and advocacy that have strengthened the tax justice movement in Rivers State.

Participants shared valuable insights to enhance the final report and ensure impact of our collective work in promoting fair and progressive taxation.

We are building a more inclusive fiscal system that works for everyone, especially the informal sector, women, and youths.

CHHELD participated in the State Level Training of Trainers organized by the Civil Society for the Eradication of Tuberculosis in Nigeria (TB Network) with support from the Global Fund. ๐ŸŒ

The training brought together selected community-based organizations in Rivers State to prepare for the implementation of Community-Led Monitoring (CLM) for TB, HIV, and malaria services. The CLM approach empowers communities to track service delivery, identify challenges such as treatment delays and stigma, and advocate for improved health services. ๐Ÿ’ช

CHHELD will be implementing the project in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA) LGA, focusing on facility monitoring, community engagement, and advocacy to ensure accountability and better access to TB, HIV, and malaria care. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

We cannot completely fix the issue of hunger in our land, but every act of kindness makes a difference. If a child is fed and cared for, even for a day, that is meaningful progress.

In Obuama Community, Degema LGA, Rivers State, we provided breakfast and distributed water bottles to over 300 pupils and students. For many, this meant starting the school day nourished, hydrated, and ready to learn.

This effort was made possible through our partnership with The Bread of Life Foundation and Redeemed Christian Church of God ( ). Together, we showed that collective action can bring dignity, hope, and strength to children and their families.

No child should have to sit in class hungry or thirsty. Step by step, community by community, we are working toward that vision.

You too can be part of this mission. Join us, partner with us, or support our next outreach. Together, we can make sure more children are fed, refreshed, and given the chance to thrive.

Port Harcourt Climate Week 2025: Innovation, Justice, and Community Action.

This gathering aimed to:
โœ… Inspire participants with justice-centered climate stories
โœ… Ground conversations in Niger Delta realities
โœ… Navigate pathways for innovation and green jobs.

The keynote speaker, Matthew Burkaa SAN, reminded us that โ€œwe are living in a world where everything is interconnectedโ€ โ€” a powerful call for collective responsibility in climate action. ๐ŸŒฟ

A major highlight was the Youth Hackathon Pitch Session, where young innovators showcased local solutions to address climate challenges in our communities. Their creativity, passion, and determination show that every voice in the room matters in shaping sustainable climate action.

Let's build a vital platform for collaboration, where communities, innovators, and leaders come together for a greener future.

Our team, Project Coordinator David Prince and Programs Officer Maureen Udeagha, was honored to attend the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Project inception meeting hosted by the Medical Women's Association of Nigeria (MWAN) and supported by the Ford Foundation. The event brought together key figures, including MWAN's National President, Professor Rosemary Ogu, and Ford Foundation's West Africa Program Manager, Dr. Izeduwa Derex-Briggs. It also gathered a wide range of stakeholders from government ministries, community leaders, and civil society organizations.

The meeting highlighted the serious health and economic consequences of GBV. Preliminary findings from the project revealed that violence places a heavy financial and physical toll on survivors, with victims often shouldering significant out-of-pocket expenses and suffering from severe physical injuries and psychological trauma. This data underscores the urgent need for a coordinated effort to address these issues and to make support services more accessible.

With the inauguration of a steering committee that includes dedicated "male champions," a new chapter in this fight has begun. We are proud to stand with MWAN, the Ford Foundation, and all the partners in this crucial effort to move beyond discussion and drive tangible, lasting change.
