HISTORY THURSDAY

RAFFIA PLAY...2

Agu Na Nmadu

Like I said earlier, The Raffia Play is melange of culture. In it you will see the "Nmanwu or Agaba" of Ibo and then the Nwaotam dressing of Ndoki and Opobo is reflected in its appearance. Then there is pure Nwaotam music and drumming that goes with the mask performance.

For the Agu & Nmadu Raffia play of Dappa ye Amakiri polo in Opobo is a fusion. Its' a man cut in the image of an animal. The front part of the mask has a human face, the back is that of a Leopard. What does this mean? This is reality since every human has a dark side and besides some animals are tamed and behave like humans.

Most cultures in Africa are governed by that belief that every man has animal like. In Ibo it's called "Ehihi".

When anger comes what does he demonstrate? An animal. For every human there is fierceness, unpredictability and braveness. That' s the concept behind AGU NA NMADU masquerade.

HISTORY THURSDAY

QUEENS TOWN OTAM DISPLAY

The OTAM play started in Queenstown in 1889. The drum they play is called Ikiri-Obom and they have the female and male Otam. While the female Otam displays in the morning, the male display in the evening. its totally different from what we watch and play in Opobo Main Town, Minimah, Kalaibiama and etc. the only communities that play a similar play with Queenstown are Kalasunju-Ama and Abazibie-Ama(My Beloved Birth Community).

It's from Queenstown that Nwaotam culture started spreading on the Opobo -Bonny axis.

Th one displayed at Opobo and other areas are called "Nwa" Otam- meaning a son or offspring of Otam.

The Queenstown OTAM visit three major Compounds in Queenstown during the morning play, which are Captain Uranta, Itchi-Obomanu and Agbereyegha-Obomanu during this visit alot happens.

The otam also visit every household in the community immediately he jumps down from zinc during the evening play and most times people never want the OTAM to stop playing due to it fun.

Of a truth Queenstown OTAM is the best and worth watching but my annoyance is that no one can Video or snap the OTAM.
