The Nation Newspaper Menstrual Hygiene Day: First Lady canvasses end to period poverty

Nigeria is not a socially cohesive country this is according to findings from the latest Africa Polling Institute's (API) report unveiled earlier this month, at the 2025 National Social Cohesion Dialogue. Social cohesion is citizens' willingness to cooperate for the country's survival and prosperity, faces challenges in the nation.

🔴 The 2025 survey highlights heightened distrust among citizens and a decline in public confidence in government and institutions, driven by economic hardships like inflation, unemployment, poverty, corruption, and insecurity. These factors have united citizens in a shared struggle, resulting in widespread dissatisfaction with the nation's current state.

⭐ Despite these obstacles, the report showcases pockets of resilience, with numerous citizens remaining patriotic and eager to collaborate for a more cohesive Nigeria. Optimism persists as many believe in a brighter future for the nation.

🌈 The erosion of trust due to leaders' actions indicates the need for transparency and accountability in government's dealings, in order to rebuild trust, enhance social cohesion, effective citizen engagement and good governance in Nigeria.

Breaking news! 😁
We are happy to announce that Nigeria has adopted its first menstrual health policy nationwide. This happened in Abuja on August 15, 2025.

This new policy is all about breaking the stigma around menstruation, making sanitary products more affordable and accessible, and helping girls stay in school — even during their periods. It was officially approved by the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, and it’s a major win for gender equality and health.

The policy tackles issues like shame, lack of information, and poor access to safe menstrual products — all of which can lead to girls missing school, dropping out early, or facing intimate partner violence, child marriage and early pregnancy.

In short, it’s a game-changer and the vision is bold: by 2030, no girl in Nigeria should have to choose between her education and managing her period.

From 25 November to 10 December 2025, mark the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-based Violence under the theme: “UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls”.

There is for online abuse.
Online and digital spaces should empower women and girls. Yet every day, for millions of women and girls, the digital world has become a minefield of harassment, abuse, and control.

What can start small, on screens – a message, a comment, or a post – can quickly spiral into a torrent of threats and violence in real life. Private photos are stolen without consent. Lies spread in a matter of seconds. Locations are tracked. AI is weaponized to create deepfakes designed to shame and silence women.

This 16 Days of Activism (25 November – 10 December) join UN Women and UNiTE campaign to rally for a world where technology is a force for equality – not harm. https://www.unwomen.org/en/get-involved/16-days-of-activism
