The effects of FGM can last a lifetime.

FGM is often carried out when a girl is still a child, but the consequences may continue through adolescence and adulthood.

From the immediate effects such as severe pain, bleeding, infection and difficulty urinating, to longer-term challenges including painful menstruation, recurrent infections, psychological distress, sexual health problems and complications during childbirth, FGM can affect different aspects of a survivor’s wellbeing.

Child marriage remains a serious child rights concern in Nigeria.

Although the federal Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003 prohibits marriage below the age of 18, inconsistencies in the legal framework and uneven adoption and implementation across states continue to create gaps in the protection of girls.

This means that for many girls, laws intended to protect them do not always translate into protection in practice.

Ending child marriage requires stronger implementation of existing laws, greater accountability, community engagement and sustained efforts to address the social and economic factors that place girls at risk.

Every girl deserves the opportunity to complete her education, make informed decisions about her future and grow up free from forced marriage.

The law must protect girls. Communities must support them. And institutions must act.

Together, we can end child marriage.
