THASEF COMMEMORATES 2026 UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY

Theme: “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations”

12 August 2026

The Healthy and Sanitized Environment Foundation (THASEF) joins young people, governments, civil society organisations, development partners and communities across Nigeria and the world in celebrating the 2026 United Nations International Youth Day,bcommemorated today, 12 August 2026, under the theme: “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”

International Youth Day provides an important opportunity to recognise the energy, creativity, resilience and leadership of young people and to reaffirm the need to create an enabling environment where every young person can contribute meaningfully to sustainable development.

The theme reminds us that young people may grow up in different countries, communities, cultures and economic circumstances and face different challenges, including unemployment, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, limited access to education and technology, and inadequate opportunities. Yet, across these different contexts, young people share common aspirations for dignity, inclusion, quality education, decent employment, good health and wellbeing, peace, human rights, environmental sustainability and meaningful participation in decision-making.

YOUTH AND A HEALTHY, SANITIZED ENVIRONMENT

For THASEF, the celebration of International Youth Day is particularly significant because young people are not only beneficiaries of environmental action—they are *partners and leaders in building a healthy and sustainable future.

Nigeria's young population represents a tremendous opportunity for environmental transformation. Young people can lead community sanitation campaigns, climate action initiatives, waste management and recycling programmes, tree planting, environmental education, public health advocacy and innovative solutions to the challenges of pollution, flooding, poor waste disposal and environmental degradation.

THASEF therefore calls for greater investment in youth-led environmental initiatives and the creation of platforms where young people can develop their ideas, acquire practical skills and participate in environmental governance and climate decision-making.

FROM ASPIRATION TO ACTION

The common aspirations of young people must translate into practical opportunities and measurable action.

We call on governments at all levels, development partners, private-sector organisations, civil society and community leaders to:

1. Invest in youth skills and innovation,* particularly in green jobs, climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy, waste management, recycling, environmental technology and the digital economy.

2. Strengthen youth participation in environmental governance and policymaking, ensuring that young people have a voice in decisions affecting their present and future.

3. Promote decent green employment opportunities that enable young people to earn sustainable livelihoods while contributing to environmental protection.

4. Expand environmental and climate education in schools, communities and youth organisations to build a generation of environmentally responsible citizens.

5. Support youth-led sanitation and climate initiatives,* especially at community and grassroots levels.

6.Promote inclusion and equal opportunities,* ensuring that young women, persons with disabilities and young people from disadvantaged communities are not left behind.

7. Strengthen partnerships between government, civil society, businesses and youth organisations to develop innovative solutions to Nigeria's environmental, health and climate challenges.

YOUNG PEOPLE ARE PART OF THE SOLUTION

THASEF believes that young people should not be viewed merely as leaders of tomorrow. Young people are leaders today.

Across Nigeria, young people are already demonstrating their capacity to mobilise communities, create businesses, develop technologies, advocate for environmental protection and contribute to public health and community development.

Their energy and creativity must be matched with opportunities, resources, mentorship and meaningful platforms for participation.

As Nigeria and the global community confront the interconnected challenges of climate change, environmental pollution, sanitation, unemployment, public health and inequality, investing in young people is an investment in a healthier, safer and more sustainable future.

OUR COMMITMENT

On this International Youth Day, THASEF reaffirms its commitment to working with young people, government institutions, communities, development partners and other stakeholders to promote *environmental sustainability, climate action, sanitation, public health, youth empowerment and inclusive development.*

We encourage young Nigerians to embrace leadership, innovation, volunteerism, environmental responsibility and peaceful civic participation.

Let us transform our common aspirations into collective action.

Different contexts may shape our experiences, but our aspirations unite us.

Together, we can build a cleaner, healthier, greener and more sustainable Nigeria where no young person is left behind.

Happy United Nations International Youth Day 2026!

THASEF COMMENDS RENEWED HOPE AMBASSADORS STUDENTS FORUM, RIVERS STATE, ON ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION EXERCISE.

The Executive Director of The Healthy and Sanitize Environment Foundation (THASEF) has warmly commended the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Students Forum, Rivers State, for organizing a Sanitation and Clean-up Exercise held on Saturday, 18th July 2026 at its Secretariat along Aba Road, by Pleasure Park, Port Harcourt.

In a statement issued by the Media Assistant to the Executive Director Mr Ajah Christopher Michael, the Executive Director Nze Agu Uzo (Nze-Obi) described the initiative as a timely, patriotic, and commendable effort aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness, healthy living, and responsible citizenship among young people.

According to the Executive Director, environmental sanitation remains one of the most effective and affordable means of safeguarding public health, preventing disease outbreaks, preserving ecosystems, and improving the quality of life within our communities. Nze Agu Uzo noted that the sanitation exercise demonstrates that sustainable environmental development begins with individual and collective responsibility.

The Executive Director applauded the leadership of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Students Forum for recognizing that environmental stewardship is not solely the responsibility of government agencies but a shared obligation requiring the active participation of individuals, youth organizations, civil society groups, educational institutions, and the private sector.

The ED further stated that poor environmental sanitation continues to contribute significantly to blocked drainage systems, flooding, pollution, indiscriminate waste disposal, and the spread of preventable diseases across many Nigerian communities. It therefore described the planned clean-up exercise as a practical intervention capable of inspiring behavioural change and promoting environmental consciousness among citizens.

The Executive Director believes that initiatives such as this align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Goal 13 (Climate Action), Goal 15 (Life on Land), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Such grassroots actions contribute meaningfully to building resilient, healthy, and environmentally sustainable communities.

The Executive Director also emphasized that environmental sanitation is more than periodic clean-up activities; it is a culture that must be embraced daily through proper waste management, recycling, environmental education, tree planting, protection of public spaces, and responsible disposal of refuse.

The ED therefore calls on government institutions, youth organizations, schools, faith-based organizations, corporate bodies, market associations, and community leaders across Rivers State and Nigeria to emulate this laudable initiative by organizing regular sanitation exercises and environmental awareness campaigns capable of transforming our communities into cleaner, safer, and healthier places.

The Executive Director equally urges residents of Rivers State to actively participate in the sanitation exercise and continue supporting efforts that promote environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and public health.

As an organization dedicated to advancing environmental sanitation, climate action, public health, and sustainable development, THASEF remains committed to collaborating with government agencies, youth groups, development partners, and community-based organizations in promoting environmental responsibility and building a cleaner Nigeria for present and future generations.

The Executive Director once again congratulates the leadership and members of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Students Forum, Rivers State, for this inspiring initiative and encourages them to sustain the momentum through continuous environmental advocacy and community engagement.

THASEF Calls for Urgent Government Intervention Following Devastating Flooding Along Ikwerre Road, Port Harcourt

The Healthy and Sanitized Environment Foundation (THASEF) has called for urgent government intervention following the devastating flooding that affected residents and business owners along the Ikwerre Road axis of Port Harcourt after Thursday's heavy rainfall.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt by the River State Program Coordinator Mr Udu Benjamin on behalf of THASEF, the Foundation described the incident as a painful reminder of the increasing vulnerability of Nigerian cities to flooding caused by inadequate drainage infrastructure, rapid urbanization, and the growing impacts of climate change.

THASEF noted with concern that the flood submerged homes, shops, and major sections of the road, disrupting commercial activities, destroying goods and properties worth millions of naira, and leaving many residents struggling to recover from their losses.

The Foundation sympathized with all affected residents and business owners and commended their resilience in the face of the unfortunate disaster.

THASEF urged the Rivers State Government to immediately assess the affected communities, provide emergency relief and support to victims, and commence the rehabilitation, expansion, and proper maintenance of drainage systems along the Ikwerre Road corridor and other flood-prone areas across the state.

The Foundation further called for regular desilting of drainage channels, strict enforcement of environmental sanitation regulations, and sustained public awareness campaigns to discourage indiscriminate disposal of waste into waterways, which contributes significantly to urban flooding.

THASEF emphasized that as climate change continues to intensify extreme weather events across Nigeria, governments at all levels must prioritize investments in climate-resilient infrastructure, sustainable urban planning, effective flood management systems, and environmental protection.

The Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to promoting environmental sustainability, climate action, disaster risk reduction, and healthier communities through advocacy, research, and strategic partnerships nationwide.
