UMATU EZE ONICHA | THE MAIZE FEAST

Today, Onitsha Ado N’Idu comes together to celebrate Umatu Eze Onicha, the traditional Feast of the Maize Harvest.

Umatu is more than a celebration of the new corn harvest. It is a time of thanksgiving, remembrance and prayer for the wellbeing of the people and the abundance of the coming year.

The celebration begins with the Obi of Onitsha, followed by the heads of non-royal clans, spiritual leaders of kindred groups, red-cap chiefs, and ultimately, titled and non-titled citizens alike.

At the heart of the feast is nni-oka, the traditional corn meal, prepared as the symbolic food of the season. Before the feast begins, offerings are made in remembrance of the ancestors, seeking health, prosperity and continued blessings for the community.

Then comes the sound of Egwú Ota, the traditional war drum.

The kingdom comes alive.

Chiefs emerge in full regalia. Elders gather. The people dance, sing and celebrate a tradition carried across generations.

The Umatu celebration spans sixteen days:

• Four days for the Obi within the palace
• Four days for Eze-idi
• Four days for Ikpala Isi
• Four days for Umueze Chima

The celebration concludes with Ikpoko Akwukwo Ogili, marking the symbolic clearing away of the vegetable containers and the closing of the maize harvest cycle.

📍 Today, Ime Obi Onitsha will bring you LIVE coverage of Umatu Eze Onicha from 3:00 PM.

Experience the sights, sounds, people and traditions of one of Onitsha’s enduring cultural celebrations.

Watch. Celebrate. Remember.
