As Nnamdi Kanu trial reaches a critical juncture, we at ANIIA are closely watching for its implications on justice and the rule of law.
Kanu’s defense was formally foreclosed after he declined to present witnesses, arguing that the charges against him are based on outdated or repealed law. Some of his motions raise constitutional concerns, including jurisdictional legitimacy.
This case underscores important governance issues: fair trial, judicial independence, and legal certainty. If laws are applied improperly, or if defendants are tried under statutes that no longer exist, our justice system's credibility and integrity are at stake.
We believe that true development requires justice that works for all. We call on the courts, government, and civil society to ensure that every trial upholds constitutional rights, even in politically sensitive cases.
We invite you to join this conversation: What does fair justice mean to you especially when politics and law collide?
