The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) Nigeria, Niger State Chapter, deeply commiserates with our members whose economic conditions have long been strangulated, leaving many stranded and struggling under difficult circumstances. Sadly, the situation has been further worsened by the devastating windstorms recorded since the beginning of this rainy season, which destroyed many of the modest homes and properties our members laboured tirelessly to build.

We equally sympathize with students, teachers, and entire school communities across the state as public secondary schools, already subjected to years of neglect, continue to deteriorate. Many classrooms have been damaged, forcing abnormal and uncomfortable rearrangements for teaching and learning activities.

Today, students are more exposed to discomfort, emotional depression, and deprivation than ever before. The poor condition of school infrastructure and the harsh economic realities facing education workers continue to threaten the future of quality education in our society.

Government at all levels must urgently recognize education as a critical investment and not a burden. Reviving the education sector and restoring it to its rightful status is essential for sustainable development, human capital growth, and improved revenue generation for the state and nation at large.

As a union, we fully understand and share in the pains of our members and the affected communities. Though our present capacity may not go beyond commiseration and continuous advocacy at this difficult moment, we remain hopeful and prayerful for divine intervention, relief, and positive action from relevant authorities.

We pray that the Almighty grants strength, protection, and restoration to all affected members and their families.

Signed:

MESSAGE FROM ASUSS NIGER STATE CHAPTER ON THE OCCASION OF THE 2026 WORKERS’ DAY

…… Theme: “Insecurity and Poverty: The Bane of Decent Work”

Comrades, Esteemed Members of ASUSS Niger State Chapter, and Our Valued Employers,

Today, as we join the global community and the Organized Labour in Nigeria to commemorate “Workers’ Day 2026” We do so under very challenging circumstances. This year’s celebration is not one of fanfare but of deep reflection and renewed commitment. The national theme — “Insecurity and Poverty: The Bane of Decent Work” — resonates powerfully with the harsh realities confronting our members in Niger State.

Many of the secondary schools where our dedicated teachers serve remain closed or operate under severe threats due to the escalating wave of insecurity. banditry, abduction, and other forms of violence have forced the shutdown of schools, disrupted academic calendars, and created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. Our members, who have always shown unwavering commitment to nurturing the minds of Niger State’s children, now find themselves economically drained, with salaries delayed or insufficient in the face of rising costs of living, and psychologically burdened by the trauma of insecurity and prolonged disruption of their professional lives.

To Our Dear Members (Teachers):

We salute your resilience and sacrifice. Despite the closures, the threats to your safety, and the economic pressures that have left many families struggling, you have continued to demonstrate the true spirit of the teaching profession. Many of you have had to improvise lessons, support displaced students, and maintain hope even when your own psychological well-being is stretched to the limit.

ASUSS Niger State Chapter stands firmly with you. We acknowledge your pain, your fears, and your silent struggles. This Workers’ Day is a moment to remind you that you are not alone. We urge you to prioritize your mental health, support one another, and continue to uphold the dignity of the teaching profession. Together, through unity and collective advocacy, we shall overcome these trials. Your welfare remains our top priority — we will continue to press for prompt payment of salaries and allowances, adequate compensation for the risks you face, and sustainable support systems to restore your economic and psychological stability.

To Our Employers (Niger State Government, Ministry of Education, School Proprietors, and Other Stakeholders):

The current situation in our secondary schools is unacceptable and unsustainable. Insecurity has not only endangered the lives of our students and teachers but has also crippled the delivery of quality education — the very foundation for the development of Niger State. Poverty, compounded by insecurity, has made “decent work” a distant dream for our members.

We call on you to treat this as an emergency:
1- Prioritize the full restoration of security in all school environments through adequate deployment of security personnel, perimeter fencing, surveillance, and community engagement.
2- Ensure the safe and prompt reopening of all closed secondary schools with guaranteed protection for students and staff.
3- Address the economic plight of teachers by ensuring timely and full payment of salaries, arrears, and allowances, while reviewing welfare packages to cushion the effects of the current hardship.
4- Invest meaningfully in the psychosocial support for teachers who have endured trauma, displacement, and loss.

Decent work cannot thrive where fear reigns and poverty deepens. We urge you to partner with ASUSS and other stakeholders to tackle these twin evils of insecurity and poverty head-on. The future of our children and the development of our dear state depend on your decisive action today.

As we reflect on this 2026 Workers’ Day, let us renew our collective resolve. ASUSS Niger State Chapter remains committed to constructive engagement, dialogue, and advocacy for the rights and welfare of secondary school teachers. We believe that with sincerity, collaboration, and urgent intervention, we can restore safety to our schools, dignity to the teaching profession, and hope to our members.

“Together, let us build a safer, more prosperous Niger State where every teacher can deliver decent work in a secure and enabling environment.”

Long live ASUSS!
Long live the Teachers of Niger State!
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

We are great again 🙏

ASUSS REJECTS TRCN DEDUCTIONS, RAISES WELFARE, HARASSMENT CONCERN.

April 23, 2026

The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) has directed that its members nationwide should no longer remit funds to the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), citing what it described as an “unbecoming attitude” by the regulatory body.

The decision was part of resolutions reached at the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Thursday at Green Minds Hotel, Utako, Abuja, with delegates from across the country in attendance.

Addressing journalists after the meeting alongside members of the National Administrative Council, the National President of ASUSS, Comrade Sola Adigun, said the union was dissatisfied with the conduct of TRCN in its dealings with ASUSS.

“The NEC frowned at the disposition of TRCN in respect of their unbecoming attitude. A situation whereby TRCN will desire to have our money, but timidly they want to be obeying NUT, getting instruction from NUT,” he said.

He added that the union had taken a firm position on the matter. “The NEC in session has resolved that henceforth, ASUSS members’ money shall not be deducted to TRCN across the country. If you don’t want our face, our money will not be available.”

The NEC also raised concerns over alleged harassment of its members in the Federal Capital Territory by agents of the Nigeria Union of Teachers during an ongoing industrial action declared by the latter.

According to Adigun, ASUSS is not part of the strike and had instructed its members in the FCT to continue their duties.

“Our chapter in the FCT vehemently opposed the strike and ordered our members to keep on doing their daily activities in the school. But surprisingly, what we discovered was that NUT representatives went about harassing our members in their workplace,” he said.

The union called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and relevant government agencies to intervene. “The NEC in session frowned at this and want the minister and other government agencies to warn and put an end to this,” he added.

On internal matters, the NEC cautioned against the proliferation of unauthorized groups within the union, warning that such bodies are not recognized under its constitution.

“NEC in session resolved that all illegal bodies and associations that are not in tandem with our constitution across the states should not be tolerated by our state chapters,” Adigun stated, urging aggrieved members to channel complaints through established procedures.

He further warned that state leaders who disregard directives from the National Secretariat would face sanctions.

The union also emphasized the need for renewed professional commitment among members, while outlining plans to improve welfare through insurance schemes.
“We called the attention of our members to the need for their commitment to duty, commitment to this profession, because this is the hope of the future,” Adigun said.

He noted that the union would pursue initiatives aimed at improving members’ wellbeing. “The NEC in session resolved that the union will be involved in group life insurance policies and health insurance policies, so that our members will have confidence… to give their best to the society.”

Also speaking, the National Secretary, Comrade Kenneth C. Okoh, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to protecting the welfare, dignity of labour, and professional integrity of its members.

The NEC meeting is ASUSS’s highest decision-making body and serves as a platform for reviewing developments in the education sector and setting the union’s national agenda.

TRIBUTE TO A PIONEER: MALLAM ABDULLAHI NASIRU

With profound sadness and a deep sense of loss, the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Niger State Chapter, mourns the passing of our respected retired colleague, Mallam Abdullahi Nasiru.

Mallam Abdullahi Nasiru was more than a retired tutor; he remained one of the unwavering pioneers of our union. Even after his retirement, he never disconnected from the struggle. He consistently demonstrated uncommon commitment, selflessness, and loyalty to the growth and development of ASUSS in Niger State.

At no point did he pursue selfish interests or work against the collective progress of the union.
His wise counsel, timely advice, and constructive cautions were always valuable and deeply appreciated. He offered guidance without bitterness and corrected errors without holding malice. His fatherly disposition and dedication to the union’s cause will be greatly missed.

We pray that Almighty Allah grants him eternal rest in Al-Jannah Firdaus and comforts his family, friends, and all of us who were privileged to know and work with him. May he receive the full reward of his good deeds.

We wish he had enjoyed his retirement benefits in full and spent more peaceful years with his family before embarking on this inevitable journey to his glorious future.

May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him a blessed hereafter.

Adieu Baba 😭
Ameen.
