YCGD Initiative Raises Alarm Over Insecurity and Poor Sanitation in Kpakungu and Fadikpe Communities

FULL REPORT:

The YCGD Initiative today embarked on a community outreach and surveillance visit to Kpakungu and Fadikpe Communities to assess the living conditions, health risks, and welfare of residents in the areas.

During the strolling assessment, the YCGD team observed several pressing concerns that pose serious threats to the safety, health, and dignity of community members.

1. FAMILY LIVING INCOMPLETE BUILDING AMID BUSH
The team discovered a family residing in an incomplete and uncompleted building surrounded by thick, bushy vegetation.
The structure lacks doors, windows, and basic security. The surrounding bush creates an environment that is highly vulnerable to:
• Wild animal attacks - snakes, reptiles and other wildlife
• Insecurity - exposure to criminal elements at night
• Harsh weather - rain, wind, and cold due to lack of proper shelter

“We paused to think about this family for a moment. What will become of them if a wild animal attacks at night? Their survival will truly be at stake,” a YCGD volunteer noted during the visit.

This situation highlights the urgent need for housing support, shelter intervention, and community protection for vulnerable families living in substandard conditions.

2. IMPROPER WASTE DISPOSAL: WASTE BIN IN THE MIDDLE OF RESIDENTIAL AREA
In the middle of the community environment, the team observed a waste bin/dump site located directly within a residential area.
The waste site poses major health hazards to residents, including:
• Foul odor and air pollution
• Breeding ground for mosquitoes, flies, and rodents
• Risk of water contamination and disease outbreaks such as cholera, malaria, and diarrhea

This is not good for the health of the people living in the environment. Proper waste management is critical to preventing disease and maintaining a clean, safe community.

YCGD INITIATIVE RECOMMENDATIONS:
Following today’s findings, YCGD Initiative calls on:

1. Government Agencies & NGOs: To provide urgent shelter assistance and relocation support for the affected family.
2. Environmental Health Department: To relocate the waste bin to a designated, safe dump site away from residential areas and to commence regular evacuation.
3. Community Leaders: To mobilize residents for community sanitation exercises and bush clearing around homes.
4. Well-meaning Individuals: To support vulnerable families with building materials, food, and basic needs.

CONCLUSION:
The YCGD Initiative remains committed to "Seeing, Serving, and Speaking for the Voiceless."
Today’s outreach in Kpakungu and Fadikpe reminds us that many families are still living in conditions that threaten their health and safety.

WHO IS RAISING THE NEXT GENERATION?

Good day.

Today, we ask a question that concerns every one of us:

Who is raising the next generation?

Is it only the teachers?

Is it only the parents?

Is it the government?

Or is it all of us?

A child spends some hours in school, some hours at home, and the rest of their time within the community and online.

Every day, they are learning something from someone.

They are watching us.

They are listening to us.

They are learning from the way we speak, the way we treat others, and the choices we make.

If we want a generation that respects others, we must teach respect.

If we want a generation that values education, we must support education.

If we want responsible leaders tomorrow, we must begin raising responsible young people today.

The future doctor is in a classroom today.

The future teacher is in a classroom today.

The future engineer, entrepreneur, leader, and community builder may be a child who is waiting for someone to believe in them.

The question is not only what kind of future we want.

The question is: What are we doing today to build it?

At YCGD Initiative, we believe raising the next generation is a collective responsibility.

Parents. Teachers. Schools. Communities. Traditional leaders. Government. Organizations. Everyone has a role.

Because the children we guide today will become the society we live in tomorrow.

Today's Report: Rebuilding Our School Infrastructure

A child cannot reach their full potential in an environment that is unsafe or unfit for learning.

Many schools still face serious infrastructure challenges, including damaged classrooms, leaking roofs, broken windows, inadequate furniture, poor sanitation facilities, and overcrowded learning spaces.

Every child deserves a clean, safe, and inspiring classroom where learning can take place with dignity.

Improving school infrastructure is not only the responsibility of government.
Communities, traditional rulers, religious leaders, business owners, philanthropists, alumni associations, corporate organizations, and individuals all have a role to play.

One renovated classroom...
One new roof...
One set of desks and chairs...
One borehole...
One school library...
One computer laboratory...

can change the lives of hundreds of children.

We are excited to announce that YCGDI Team Benin (Edo State) has officially begun preparations to launch the YCGDI School Voices Initiative.

This marks another important step in our mission to transform lives, strengthen education, and give students, teachers, and school leaders a platform to share their voices.

From one community to another, YCGD Initiative is expanding its impact across Nigeria one school, one voice, and one future at a time.

Benin is taking action, and more state chapters will begin their activities soon.
This is only the beginning.

Today's Report: Education, Skills, and the Future of Employment

Today, we examine one of the biggest challenges facing young people: unemployment.

Every year, thousands of students graduate from secondary schools, colleges, and universities with high hopes of finding employment. Yet many remain unemployed for months or even years, not because education has no value, but because the job market is changing faster than the skills many graduates possess.

Many employers today are looking for people who can solve problems, use technology, communicate effectively, and perform practical tasks. In many cases, academic qualifications alone are no longer enough.

Education gives us knowledge, critical thinking, and professional qualifications.

Skills give us the practical ability to create value, solve real-world problems, earn an income, and even build businesses.

The future belongs to young people who have both.

The next generation should not choose between school and skills they should pursue both, a student can attend school while also learning a practical skill such as digital technology, graphic design, tailoring, electrical installation, plumbing, carpentry, agriculture, coding, photography, video editing, baking, or other vocational and entrepreneurial skills.

By combining education with practical skills, young people become more employable, more innovative, and more prepared for the future.

Economic conditions that reduce the number of available jobs.
The solution is not to abandon education, but to strengthen it with practical skills and lifelong learning.

Through YCGD Initiative Academy, we are committed to promoting quality education, digital literacy, vocational training, entrepreneurship, and skill development so young people can become job creators as well as job seekers.
