The Boycott's Call: A Tale of Collective Action

In the sweltering heat of Gbagada, Lagos, a quiet revolution unfolded. Residents, weary of the rising tide of insecurity attributed to the Aboki community, took matters into their own hands. They baldy wanted to chase out every Aboki within that estate but first they needed to be strategic about it because they are not the government. strategically, they imposed a ban on businesses predominantly run by the Abokis, from roadside kiosks to okada, and even Meruwa and hawkers. The impact was swift and profound. Within weeks, the Hausa presence dissipated, leaving behind a vacuum that local entrepreneurs eagerly filled.

But here's the remarkable part: the ban didn't just affect the Hausa community. It also affected the indigenous people of Gbagada who had made a living from similar businesses. Some were kiosk owners, others were okada riders, and a few hawked on the streets. Infact Doofan Happy Nyiar Udura business in Gbagada was also affected because she had to close down her roadside food spot too. Yet, in the face of insecurity, they understood that collective action was necessary. They made sacrifices, and in doing so, they reclaimed their streets and their sense of safety. After which the residents resumed their businesses, this time with zero Aboki competitions. I was also a Gbagada resident who witnessed this firsthand.

Inspired by this story, we in Benue are calling for a similar collective action. Frustrated by the activities of the Fulani cattle herders, we believe it's time to hold them accountable. We're urging, Nigerians to join us in boycotting beef, a crucial step towards creating a significant shift in the cattle business. As the proverb goes, "When you can't directly confront the elephant, avoid its path." By choosing alternatives to beef, we can make our voices heard and bring about meaningful change.

Some may argue that this boycott unfairly targets a particular group or affects innocent individuals, like the very few indigenous cattle rearers who are not part of the problem. But we believe that collective action can be a potent force for change. Just as the people of Gbagada made sacrifices for the greater good, we too can make temporary sacrifices to send a strong message. For those in the beef business who are not Fulani, we understand that this boycott may affect your livelihoods. But we also know that there are alternatives. You can switch to rearing other livestock, like goats, sheep, or poultry, which can provide a sustainable income while we demonstrate our commitment to change by boycotting beef.

As the saying goes, "The drum beats for those who come together." By standing together and making conscious choices, we can shape the narrative of our country and create a better future for ourselves and for generations to come. We're not asking for a permanent ban, but a temporary sacrifice to send a strong message. Will you join us in this boycott? Will you stand with us and make your voice heard? Together, we can create a wave of change that will resonate across Nigeria. Let's come together and say no to beef, promoting peace, unity, and sustainable living in our community. The power is in our hands, and our choices will shape the future of our country.
