The Kwande Intermediary Area Traditional Council (KIATC),

Through,

The Executive Council,
Kwande United People's Organization (KWUPO),

Dear Esteemed Executive Council,

*Resignation from the Position of Youth Leader*

I write to formally tender my resignation from the position of Youth Leader of the Kwande United People’s Organization (KWUPO), effective from today Sunday 8th, February 2026 after due consultation with my Kindred head (Tyoor).

It has been an immense honor to serve as the youth leader for nearly a year. During this period, I was privileged to work alongside dedicated individuals and witness the passion and potential of our youth. Among the highlights of my tenure was organizing the first-ever Youth Summit, which provided a platform for extensive discussions on issues affecting our community. Following the summit, we launched a skills acquisition program that empowered over two hundred young people with tech skills at no cost, a milestone that fills me with pride and hope for the future.

Leadership, as I have always believed, is a responsibility that demands consistent presence, engagement, and the ability to address the concerns of those one serves. Recently, however, unforeseen circumstances have constrained my ability to fulfill these duties effectively. My continued absence has begun to impact my performance, and I believe that the youth of KWUPO deserve a leader who can be fully present and actively engaged.

This decision to resign is not made lightly, nor is it an abdication of duty. Rather, it stems from a deep respect for the responsibilities of this office and a commitment to the ideals of service and accountability. I believe that stepping aside at this time is in the best interest of the organization and the youth we serve, allowing space for new leadership to continue the progress we have initiated.

I remain deeply committed to the vision of KWUPO and will always be available to support the organization in any capacity possible. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Kwande Intermediary Area Traditional Council (KIATC), KWUPO Executive Council, members, and the entire youth wing for the trust, cooperation, and support accorded to me during my tenure.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve. I wish KWUPO continued success and growth in all its endeavors.

Yours faithfully,
Dr. Tavershima Iorkase Mongol
Outgoing Youth Leader, KWUPO

The Tragic Misalignment of the Military's Role in Society: A Call for Justice

The recent events in Jato Aka, situated in the Kwande Local Government of Benue State, serve as a harrowing reminder of the critical failures in the relationship between military forces and the civilian populations they are meant to protect. The violent encounter that unfolded in the aftermath of the burial in a community beleaguered for over a decade by violence from Fulani herders is not just an isolated incident; it encapsulates a broader and more alarming trend of militarization and misuse of power against ordinary citizens. This is reprehensible and condemnable.

For the residents of Nzaav Yaav in the Turan district, the local military was expected to be an ally in a time of tragedy and vulnerability. After the loss of their district head, the community sought the military’s assistance to safely es**rt them to the burial site, a reasonable request given the historical context of violence that has plagued the region. Tragically, instead of offering protection and support, the military turned down their request, abandoning the very obligation they hold to protect those in need.

In a situation where families were collectively mourning the loss of a beloved leader, the courage shown by the youth to lead the burial reflects resilience and a deep respect for their customs. However, their resolve was met with a shocking and brutal reaction. The military, having abandoned their protective role, turned violent against unarmed mourners, which resulted in the tragic death of three individuals and left several others injured.

This incident raises not only questions about the accountability of military forces but also brings to light the systemic issues of trust, safety, and the ethical responsibilities of those sworn to serve and protect. When military personnel inflict harm on the very citizens they are meant to safeguard, a profound breach of social contract occurs. It is incumbent upon us as a society to demand accountability and justice in such matters. The silence of well-meaning citizens in the face of such brutality only serves to further entrench these violent behaviors.

This unacceptable cycle of violence against innocents under the guise of authority must come to an end. Citizens, particularly in affected communities, deserve assurances that their lives matter and that they can turn to their military forces in times of need without fear of retribution or violence. The notion that military personnel, equipped and trained to defend, can so easily turn their weapons against unarmed citizens is a clear failure of leadership at multiple levels.

To this end, I urge every concerned citizen of our country, activists, civil society organizations, political leaders, and ordinary individuals to raise their voices against this barbaric act. Public outcry is essential in holding accountable those responsible for this heinous crime. Investigations into the actions of the military in this unfortunate incident must be conducted transparently, with those found guilty facing the full extent of the law.

Moreover, we must advocate for meaningful reforms within the military that emphasize community engagement and human rights training, ensuring that future interactions reflect respect and duty rather than violence and intimidation. Addressing the necessary balance and boundaries of military engagement in civilian affairs is critical for the restoration of trust and stability.

As we stand in solidarity with the bereaved families and the community of Jato Aka, let us reaffirm our commitment to justice and demand accountability for the senseless loss of life. Failure to act in the face of such tragedies risks normalizing violence against citizens by forces intended to protect them. Together, we can foster a society where the rights of every individual are respected, and the rule of law prevails unequivocally.

The Imperative of Communal Living: Rethinking the Tiv Settlement Pattern

The Tiv Nation, rich in cultural heritage and a strong agrarian identity, has traditionally favored a sparse settlement pattern. This approach allows individuals to settle apart from one another, claiming ownership of parcels of land for farming. While this model has its merits such as the independence it fosters, recent events have compelled us to rethink this agrarian strategy. The increasing frequency of attacks by terrorist groups, particularly the menace posed by armed Fulani herders, underscores the urgent need for collective security and cooperation within our farming communities.
As farmers within the Tiv Nation, we must acknowledge that we are not isolated individuals, but part of a resilient community that faces common threats. The current sparse settlement pattern leaves isolated farms vulnerable to attacks, depriving families of their livelihoods and threatening food security. The challenges posed by criminal elements demand innovative responses, urging us to transition towards a more communal approach to farming.
One potential solution is to form clusters/groups of farmers who would not only work the land together but also forge supportive networks that enhance security. By coming together, we can better leverage collective resources, pooling our efforts for mutual benefit. These farming clusters would facilitate the sharing of not just tools and expertise, but also information that can be vital for safety and security.
In such a communal model, the feasibility of hiring security personnel becomes more practical. Rather than each farmer independently bearing the burden of securing their isolated lands, clusters can enlist the services of trained security agents who can provide effective coverage across a larger area. This strategic positioning would not only deter attackers but also cultivate a sense of safety that encourages farmers to return to their fields without fear.
Moreover, forming groups encourages collaborative farming practices that can lead to enhanced productivity. When farmers work together, they can share knowledge and skills regarding crop rotation, pest management, and sustainable practices that are crucial for maintaining the health of our land. This shift not only addresses security concerns but also promotes more efficient agricultural practices, leading to increased yields and improved livelihoods.
Another potential benefit of this communal approach lies in social cohesion. The act of farming can foster a stronger sense of community where relationships are built, burdens are shared, and cultural ties are strengthened. In tough times, it is this unity that can provide emotional and social support, creating a resilient fabric through collective experience and cooperation.
We must also advocate for support from local governments and non-governmental organizations to facilitate this transition. Policies should be enacted that encourage communal farming practices, provide financial assistance for group initiatives, and offer training that emphasizes teamwork in agriculture.
In conclusion, the imperative to rethink the Tiv settlement pattern is not just a response to security threats, but a progressive step towards ensuring the sustainability and vitality of our agrarian lifestyle. By moving away from the individualistic, sparse settlement model to a more cooperative and communal one, we empower ourselves as farmers and strengthen our communities against external attacks. The time for action is now; let us unite to cultivate not just our lands, but also our future.
