Yesterday at Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, the Platform for African Youth in Climate Action and Peacebuilding (PAYCAP), under the Powering Peace through Climate Action (PPCA II) project, funded by International Alert Nigeria and the Government held a one-day awareness and sensitization programme on the link between climate change and conflict.
The discussions explored how climate change can contribute to resource competition, displacement, loss of livelihoods, and tensions that can trigger or worsen conflicts, while highlighting the important role young people can play in building climate-resilient and peaceful communities.
Centre For Family Empowerment CFE) was represented by its Executive Director, Theodora Chia who also serves as Vice Chairperson of Women in Climate Action. In her goodwill message, she encouraged the students to see climate action as a collective responsibility and to take the conversation beyond the university into their homes and communities.
She also highlighted the opportunities in waste management, encouraging young people to explore how waste can be transformed into innovation, livelihoods, and economic opportunities.
Most inspiring was seeing students not only engage in the discussions but also make commitments to take action and promote conversations around climate change within their communities.
Climate action is everyone’s responsibility—and young people have a powerful role to play.
