ECCAI SUPPORTS SISTERS OF NATIVITY GENERALATE WITH FRUIT TREE SEEDLINGS

The Environment and Climate Change Amelioration Initiative ECCAI has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action with a tree-planting exercise and presentation of hybrid fruit tree seedlings to the Sisters of Nativity Generalate, Makurdi.

The initiative is in line with the call by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria to care for our common home and ECCAI’s commitment to promoting tree planting, biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and environmental sustainability.

The seedlings, comprising Guava, Orange, Mango, Soursop and Pear, were presented by ECCAI’s Executive Director, Mrs. Victoria Esa, who also led the tree-planting exercise.

Speaking during the exercise, Mrs. Esa emphasized the importance of trees in sustaining the environment, noting that they provide oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, prevent erosion, provide shade, food and medicinal benefits, and contribute to healthier and more resilient communities. She also called for increased tree planting and stronger collaboration with the Sisters of Nativity in addressing the growing impacts of climate change.

The ECCAI team was warmly received by Sister Rose Agbo, who, while representing the Mother Superior, expressed appreciation for the initiative and welcomed continued partnership and environmental awareness, particularly in tackling indiscriminate tree felling and promoting biodiversity conservation.

The exercise demonstrates that caring for the earth is a shared responsibility. By planting trees today, we are protecting our environment, supporting biodiversity and building a healthier and more sustainable future for generations to come.

20 Women in Obi LGA Gain Climate-Smart Farming Skills as Benue ACReSAL Promotes Food Security

Twenty women in Abikpom Community, Obi Local Government Area of Benue State, have received practical training in sack farming as part of efforts to strengthen household food production and build resilience to climate change.

The training was organised by Benue ACReSAL through ECCAI, the Benue Zone C Focal NGO, to equip the women with skills to grow food crops in limited spaces using locally available materials.

Participants were trained on sack farming techniques, preparation of growing media, organic pest management and crop establishment. They also received sacks, ginger, Vitamin A-rich potato and pepper seedlings, organic pesticides and liquid organic manure to establish their own sack farms.

The initiative is expected to contribute to improved nutrition, household food security, income generation and sustainable agricultural practices in the community.

Benue ACReSAL Trains 20 Women in Onyepa Community on Sack Farming

OHIMINI, BENUE: Twenty women in Onyepa Community, Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State, have received practical training on sack farming as part of efforts to strengthen household food production, improve food security and boost livelihoods.

The training, organised by the Benue Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes, ACReSAL Project, through Environment and Climate Change Amelioration Initiative, ECCAI, the ACReSAL Focal NGO for Zone C Senatorial District, was held on Friday, August 14, 2026, at the Onyepa Community Square.

The training exposed participants to the benefits and techniques of sack farming, particularly its potential to support food production where access to large expanses of farmland is limited.

During the theoretical session, the women were taken through the processes involved in establishing and managing sack farms, including preparation of the growing medium, crop establishment, nutrition and pest management.

The programme also provided participants with essential farming inputs, including sacks, ginger, potato and pepper seedlings, cattle dung, liquid organic manure and organic pesticide.

The practical session brought the training to life as participants were guided through the step-by-step preparation and establishment of their sack farms.

They learned how to properly combine topsoil, sharp sand and animal dung to create a suitable growing medium. The mixture was treated with organic pesticide before being used to fill the sacks and plant the selected crops.

For the beneficiaries, the hands-on exercise provided an opportunity to move beyond theory and acquire practical skills they can replicate in their homes using limited space.

The intervention is expected to strengthen the women’s capacity for small-scale food production, contribute to household food security and create additional livelihood opportunities within Onyepa Community.

The training further demonstrates the importance of climate-smart and space-efficient agricultural practices in building resilient households and communities across Benue State.

BENUE ACReSAL PRESERVING ENDANGERED TREE SPECIES THROUGH COMMUNITY FOREST ESTABLISHMENT IN AGILA COMMUNITY

The Benue State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes ACReSAL Project has established a 10-hectare community forest in Agila Community, Ado LGA, Benue State, through the Environment and Climate Change Amelioration Initiative ECCAI.

The initiative is aimed at preserving endangered tree species, promoting sustainable forest management, restoring degraded landscapes, conserving valuable tree species and strengthening community participation in environmental protection.

The community forest was planted with Tenera Oil Palm, Mahogany and Teak, selected for their ecological, economic and environmental importance.

Speaking on behalf of the community, CHIEF EMMANUEL ORINYA EGRUBE, Otse of Agila Community, expressed appreciation to Benue ACReSAL for the initiative. He commended the project for promoting environmental conservation and creating long-term benefits for the community.

He pledged the community's commitment to protecting and maintaining the trees and taking ownership of the forest for the benefit of present and future generations.

Benue ACReSAL Establishes Community Forest at IGA Okpaya, Apa LGA

The Benue State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes ACReSAL Project has established a Community Forest at IGA Okpaya, Apa LGA, through the Environment and Climate Change Amelioration Initiative ECCAI.

The initiative covers approximately 5 hectares of land, planted with tree species of Tenera Oil Palm, Mahogany, and Teak.

The establishment of the community forest is aimed at conserving endangered and valuable tree species while promoting economic benefits, research, biodiversity conservation, carbon sequentation and climate change mitigation within the community and Benue State at large.

The host community expressed its appreciation to Benue ACReSAL for the initiative and pledged to take proper care of the plantation, ensuring its sustainability and the achievement of its intended objectives.

SOLAR LIGHT INSTALLATION AT BOREHOLES SITE AND MARKET SQUARE

Benue ACReSAL project as part of the interventions aimed at improving community infrastructure and promoting climate-resilient development, has embarked on the installation of solar-powered lights at the borehole sites and market squares in Olachagba of Otukpa and Orokam communities both in Ogbadigbo LGA.

The intervention is intended to provide sustainable and environmentally friendly lighting, improve visibility and security, while enhancing the functionality of these important community facilities.

ACReSAL 800-Metre Anmoda Erosion Control & Road Construction Site Visit

On 15 August 2026, the Environment and Climate Change Amelioration Initiative ECCAI, the FoNGO for Benue South Zone C, carried out a monitoring and assessment visit to the 800-metre Anmoda Erosion Control and Road Construction Project under the Benue ACReSAL Project.

The site visit provided an opportunity to assess progress, observe ongoing construction activities, and engage with relevant stakeholders on the importance of quality, sustainability and community ownership of the intervention.

The Anmoda project is a significant step towards addressing erosion, improving road access and strengthening community resilience against environmental challenges.

ECCAI remains committed to effective monitoring, environmental sustainability and interventions that deliver lasting impact for communities across Zone C.

Safeguarding for Safer Spaces: PSEA Training
Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse PSEAstarts with awareness, responsibility and action.

On 14 August 2026, Jessy Ojoma Drive for Environmental Development Foundation JODED F and Environment and Climate Change Amelioration Initiative ECCAI jointly trained their staff on PSEA, with Safeguarding at the core.

The training strengthened staff understanding of safeguarding principles and reinforced the shared responsibility to prevent, identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding risks—whether in the workplace, during field activities or within the communities where we serve.

Areas of learning were;
Understanding safeguarding and child protection,
Recognising how power can create opportunities for abuse and exploitation,
Identifying red flags linked to abuse, exploitation and harassment,
Clarifying responsibilities of leadership, staff, volunteers, partners and communities,
Building practical skills for responding appropriately to disclosures and safeguarding concerns

As development workers and civil society actors, doing good must also mean doing no harm. Safeguarding is not just a policy—it is a culture of dignity, accountability, respect and zero tolerance for exploitation and abuse.
