As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen community-driven social protection systems, OWACDO, along with its partners ActionAid Nigeria and representatives from the State Operations Coordinating Unit (SOCU), with funding from the European Union (EU) through the EU Support for Strengthening Social Protection in Nigeria (ESSPIN) project, successfully concluded the Training for Social Register Action Teams (SoRATs) in Benue State.

The Social Register Action Teams (SoRATs) are community-based volunteers drawn from existing structures at the Local Government Area level. As trusted community actors, they serve as a vital link between citizens and the government. Over the past three days, these dedicated volunteers received comprehensive training on Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), community mobilization, social accountability, evidence-based advocacy, budget tracking, and the development of community scorecards.

This capacity-building initiative has fully equipped our SoRAT members with the practical skills needed to promote transparency, build public trust, and advocate for improved social protection policies. By mobilizing citizens for National Social Register (NSR) enrollment and supporting citizen-led monitoring, they will ensure that vulnerable households are better informed, actively included, and properly supported.

Following an engaging recap of Day 2, the final day focused heavily on practical community engagement strategies. Participants were guided through the development of the Community Score Card and other vital Community Engagement Participatory Tools. These essential tools will empower the SoRATs to effectively interact with their wards, ensure transparency, and capture the true needs of the people.

The momentum carried directly into strategic planning sessions, where the teams produced clear implementation strategies and strictly defined their roles and responsibilities for the field. This ensures that every team member is fully aligned and ready to execute the project's grassroots mobilization objectives seamlessly.

A massive thank you to the European Union, ActionAid Nigeria, SOCU, and most importantly, our dedicated SoRAT participants for an unforgettable three days of learning and collaboration. The real work begins now as our teams hit the field to ensure no vulnerable person is left behind!

Okaha Women and Children Development Organization (OWACDO) carried out a sensitisation session at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Wanune, Benue State, focusing on the growing issue of Human Trafficking and its implications for individuals and communities.

The session was highly engaging, with corp members learning about the current trends and patterns of Human Trafficking, its consequences on victims, and the wider impact on society.

Overall, the session was engaging and provided over 2,500 corp members with valuable information on the dangers of Human Trafficking, the need for prevention, and the importance of protecting vulnerable persons from exploitation.

This activity was implemented under the School Anti-Trafficking Education and Advocacy Project (STEAP), funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

Building on the incredible momentum from yesterday, Day 2 of the capacity-building Training for Social Register Action Teams (SoRATs) in Benue State was highly interactive and deeply impactful. As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen community-driven social protection systems, OWACDO, along with its partners ActionAid Nigeria and representatives from the State Operations Coordinating Unit (SOCU), with funding from the European Union (EU) through the EU Support for Strengthening Social Protection in Nigeria (ESSPIN) project, continued to equip our teams for the field.
Following a comprehensive recap of Day 1, emphasizing community mobilization as a continuous effort to build trust and strengthen accountability. Today's sessions kicked off with deep dives into Community Mobilization and the robust monitoring of the National Social Register (NSR) process. We critically examined the gender dimensions of poverty through a Gender and Social Inclusion Analysis, uncovering the specific barriers that prevent vulnerable groups from accessing vital social protection programs
During her session, the Program Manager for OWACDO, Queen Ameh, highlighted the immense importance of social protection, noting that it reduces poverty and inequality, promotes dignity, improves health, and protects families against sudden shocks. She encouraged our SoRATs to actively practice gender and social inclusion in order to accurately identify and register poor and vulnerable households, breaking down the specific barriers that prevent these groups from accessing vital programs.
To make the learning experience more practical and engaging, collaborative group work was actively infused directly into the Evidence-Based Advocacy sessions facilitated by the Project Lead from ActionAid Nigeria, Sandra Jonathan. During these hands-on blocks, participants explored Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDIS), learning to identify key power holders affecting the National Social Register (NSR) and mastering techniques to advocate effectively for marginalized community members. SoRATs made presentations of their group work for review.
Similarly, the Monitoring & Reporting sessions were designed to be highly interactive rather than standard lectures. Through dedicated group exercises, the teams were introduced to the project's monitoring and reporting tools in a session facilitated by the M&E Officer, Augustine O. SoRATs were informed about all the necessary actions to be taken in gathering quality and relevant data before getting to the reporting phase on Kobo Collect, ensuring total accuracy and efficiency in the field.

As part of its efforts to strengthen community-driven social protection systems, OWACDO, along with its partners ActionAid Nigeria and representatives from the State Operations Coordinating Unit (SOCU), with funding from the European Union (EU) through the EU Support for Strengthening Social Protection in Nigeria (ESSPIN) project, successfully commenced Day 1 of the 3-day capacity building Training for Social Register Action Teams (SoRATs) in Benue State.

The core objective of today's training was to equip our SoRATs with essential data collection skills for the National Social Register. By focusing on accurately identifying poor and vulnerable households, we ensure aid reaches those most in need, reduces waste, and builds resilient communities.

The Executive Director of OWACDO gave a welcome address in which she commended the ongoing support of the EU and ActionAid Nigeria, encouraging participants to apply their new skills to foster a more inclusive, transparent, and responsive social protection system across the seven key local governments targeted in this first phase.

During the sessions, the Project Lead from ActionAid Nigeria, emphasized that the training equips teams to foster community participation and transparency, highlighting the critical need to mobilize people to get their National Identification Numbers (NIN) for registration. SOCU Head of Operations Unit, further reinforced SOCU's vital role in building and managing the register through effective grassroots mobilization.

ESSPIN Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, in his session explained that this capacity building empowers SoRATs to act as community watchdogs and evidence-based advocates, noting that this phase of the project ambitiously targets 7,100 households and 31,500 individuals.

We also heard inspiring feedback from SoRAT representatives who noted that the training is already boosting team confidence, ensuring the proper use of tools, and aligning everyone with the project goals to reduce costly mistakes in the field.

Concluding on a high note! As part of its efforts to strengthen community-driven social protection systems, OWACDO, along with its partners ActionAid Nigeria and representatives from the State Operations Coordinating Unit (SOCU), with funding from the European Union (EU) through the EU Support for Strengthening Social Protection in Nigeria (ESSPIN) project, successfully wrapped up our series of community entry visits today in Ushongo Local Government Area.

During our visit to Ushongo, we had the distinct honor of being hosted at the Traditional Council Hall. We were warmly welcomed by the District Head of the township, Zaki Alexandar Ahar. We were also honoured to have in attendance Zaki Abur Nyam, the District Head of Atirkyese, and Zaki Iorkongusu Kerngyor, the Kindred Head of Lessel. Zaki Alexandar Ahar acknowledged that our team has come in goodwill and good faith. He pledged his 100% support and promised full commitment throughout the life of the project. In a deeply appreciated gesture, he also granted us ongoing permission to use the council hall for any of our future meetings.

We were also warmly received by the local clergy and community stakeholders, who guaranteed that transparency and accountability will be consistently upheld. They assured us of their diligent cooperation to ensure that this project truly serves the collective good of the community.

The Monitoring & Evaluation officer for OWACDO on the ESSPIN project facilitated the introductory sessions. The Executive Director of OWACDO, the Project Lead from ActionAid Nigeria, and the SOCU representative reiterated our core mission of sensitization and mobilization, preparing the community to take the necessary steps toward social protection. They also clarified that the National Social Register (NSR) is designed to bring holistic, unbiased social protection to the most vulnerable, rather than just immediate cash incentives.

The Executive Director expressed her sincere appreciation for the warm welcome and encouraging words, giving special thanks to the Desk Officer, Zungwe Nguhemen Rita, for her remarkable diligence and strong mobilization efforts. The clergyman, Rev. Pastor Mlanga, also took the floor to reiterate his support, assuring our team of continued collaboration and for more good things to come.

As part of its efforts to strengthen community-driven social protection systems, OWACDO, along with its partners ActionAid Nigeria and representatives from the State Operations Coordinating Unit (SOCU), with funding from the European Union (EU) through the EU Support for Strengthening Social Protection in Nigeria (ESSPIN) project, continued our community entry visits today in Apa and Agatu Local Government Areas.

We were warmly welcomed by community and ward stakeholders in both locations, who showed great enthusiasm and pledged their cooperation to help our field teams spread the message across their respective wards.

The Programs Manager OWACDO, Project Lead ActionAid Nigeria, and the SOCU representative emphasized that our primary goal is sensitization and mobilization. We made it clear that our current presence in the field is to raise awareness rather than conduct direct registrations, highlighting the critical importance of securing a National Identification Number (NIN) to prepare for the National Social Register (NSR).

With the complementary support of local Desk Officers like Hamidu Usman in Apa and Gideon Ejechabo in Agatu, the objectives of the project were broken down perfectly for the stakeholders. They addressed past discouragements, reminding the wards that the NSR is not merely a short-term monetary cash transfer scheme. Instead, it is a long-term tool for the collective good of the local government, the state and Nigeria ensuring that holistic social protection and essential amenities reach the most vulnerable without bias.

Stakeholders engaged in highly interactive sessions, raising important questions about the rehabilitation of existing amenities and how they will be notified when registration begins. The SOCU representative assured them that sufficient awareness will be made before registration starts, and explained that the NSR database will capture both active and inactive amenities to ensure a streamlined, unbiased prioritization of community needs.

During our visit to Obi Local Government, we had the distinct honor of meeting with the Executive Chairman of Obi Local Government Area, Hon. Silas Odeh. He warmly welcomed our team, expressing his gratitude for genuine efforts to uplift his people, and pledged his full support and official permission to engage directly with the wards.

Across both local governments, we were also warmly received by community, women, and youth leaders who pledged full cooperation and mobilization across their respective wards to support our efforts on the project.

The Executive Director of OWACDO, the Project Manager from ActionAid Nigeria, and the SOCU representative emphasized that our primary goal is sensitization and mobilization. We addressed common misconceptions, clarifying that our team is not there to register people directly onto the National Social Register (NSR), but rather to mobilize the community to take the necessary steps to get registered.

Stakeholders engaged in interactive sessions to understand grassroots requirements, such as National Identification Number (NIN) registration parameters. We clarified that there is no minimum age limit for NIN registration but emphasized the use of authentic birth dates, while also discussing actionable strategies to expand our reach through continuous awareness in both formal and informal gatherings.

With the complementary support and hard work of local Desk Officers like Agbo-Ito Prince, ward reps fully embraced the initiative, recognizing the importance of preparing their people to secure their NINs and access vital social protection.

As part of efforts to build inclusive and community-driven social protection systems, the Okaha Women and Children Development Organization (OWACDO), in collaboration with ActionAid Nigeria and the State Operations Coordinating Unit (SOCU), with funding from the European Union (EU) through the EU Support for Strengthening Social Protection in Nigeria (ESSPIN) Project, conducted successful community entry visits to Tarka and Gwer East Local Government Areas of Benue State. Community leaders, women, youth, and other stakeholders warmly welcomed the team and pledged their support for the successful implementation of the project.

During the engagements, the Executive Director of OWACDO, the Project Lead from ActionAid Nigeria, and the SOCU representative emphasized that the exercise is focused on community sensitization and mobilization, while highlighting the National Social Register (NSR) as a tool for identifying and supporting vulnerable households through equitable social protection interventions. Stakeholders, including the National Orientation Agency (NOA), also shared valuable recommendations on addressing grassroots challenges and strengthening community participation.
