THE PLACENTA REFUSED TO COME OUT... BUT THAT WASN'T THE REAL DANGER.

She didn’t book with us.
She had her antenatal care in a maternity.
According to her, she was consistent.
She took her medications.
She did everything she was told.

When labour started, she delivered there.
A healthy baby boy.
Everything seemed fine.
Until the placenta refused to come out.

The midwife tried.
And tried again.
Different manoeuvres. Gentle traction. Everything she could.
But the placenta remained stuck.
At that point, they had no choice.
She was referred to us.

By the time she arrived, she was exhausted.
Drained.
Still carrying the placenta inside her.
The baby was fine.. crying, active.
But the mother…
She had gone through too much already. 😢

We moved fast.
Straight to the theatre.
Before we even commenced full resuscitation, I asked the midwife who came with her about the routine investigations done during pregnancy.
She brought out a paper and handed it over.
I looked through it.
Hepatitis B.. negative.
Hepatitis C.. negative.
HIV 1 & 2.. negative.
At least, that was reassuring.

Then I turned to the patient.
“Do you know your blood group?”
She hesitated.
“I don’t know my blood group… but my genotype is AA.”
At that point, we couldn’t assume anything.

We proceeded with care.
Under adequate monitoring, I performed a manual removal of placenta.
Carefully.
Systematically.
Because at that point, the biggest fear wasn’t just the retained placenta…
It was bleeding.

Thankfully, the placenta came out.
Complete.
We monitored her closely.
Admitted her.
Watched for any signs of postpartum hemorrhage.

Meanwhile, we had already sent her blood for proper investigations.
Then the results came back.
Her blood group…
O RHESUS NEGATIVE !

Immediately, something clicked.
We checked the baby.
The baby was O Rhesus positive.

That was when the real danger revealed itself.
Not the placenta.
Not even the delivery.
Something quieter.
Something invisible.

If nothing was done within 72 hours…
Her body would begin to form antibodies against Rhesus-positive blood.
And the next time she gets pregnant?
Her own body could attack her baby.

We didn’t waste time.
We immediately administered anti-D immunoglobulin (RhoGAM).
Right there.
Right on time.
And just like that…
A future tragedy was prevented.

Later, I thought about it.
What if the placenta had come out easily?
What if there was no complication?
What if she had delivered and gone home?
She might never have known.
And her next baby…
Might not have survived.

Sometimes, what looks like a complication…
Is the only reason a bigger disaster is prevented.

If you are pregnant or planning to be..
Know your blood group.
Especially your Rhesus status.
If you are RHESUS NEGATIVE, you MUST receive the necessary care after delivery.
Because it’s not just about this pregnancy…
It’s about the ones to come.

Not every danger is loud.
Some are silent.
And by the time they show up…
It may already be too late.

Please, don’t take chances.
Get proper antenatal care.
Do the right tests.

Ask the right questions.
Because sometimes…
what you don’t know
is what puts everything at risk 😊.

*I Was Just Hungry*

*— A Cry from The Traps Of Life 😥*

Yesterday, here on Facebook, a brother shared this heartbreaking image of a little mouse caught in a trap.

Its tiny eyes were swollen with tears.

Its paw was crushed. Blood stained the wooden floor beneath it. Yet, what caught my heart wasn’t the pain or the blood—but the words written beside it:

"I’m not a dangerous animal and I won’t hurt you. I was just hungry." 😥😥

It took me back—way back to my early years in Alagbado , Lagos State.

There was a young boy in our compound named Chima. He was always dirty, always sneaking into kitchens when no one was looking.

At least once a week, someone would shout, “That Chima don carry my garri again oh!”

I remember how we mocked him. Called him “thief.”

Some adults would beat him up. One woman even tied him to a tree once, under the hot sun, for taking a piece of fried fish.

But what we didn’t know—what we never even asked—was that Chima was just hungry.

His mother had died when he was six. His father, a drunk, barely returned home with enough money to buy a sachet of pure water. Most nights, Chima and his younger sister slept on empty stomachs.

So, he learned to steal to survive. He learned to beg, to sneak, to be smart.

And while the world saw a thief, what he truly was… was a boy in pain.

Now, years later, I see this mouse crying in a trap and I see Chima’s face.

I see the countless boys and girls in our streets.

I see the bus conductors who shout angrily—not because they enjoy it, but because life has never been kind.

I see the prostitutes in Allen Avenue , the young cult boys in Agege,

The jobless graduates walking the streets of Lagos and Abuja,

The countless prisoners in cells not because they’re wicked—but because they were just hungry.. 😥

Hunger isn’t always about food.

Some people are hungry for love.
Some are hungry for peace.
Some are hungry for hope.
Some are just hungry to be noticed—to be seen as human.

But what does society do?

We set traps.

We judge before asking questions.
We condemn before listening.
We punish without understanding.

And sadly, sometimes, even the Church—yes, the place meant for healing—becomes a trap too.. 😥

A brother falls into sin and we throw him out. A sister comes pregnant and we push her to the back. But have we ever stopped to ask: Why did she fall? What hunger was she trying to feed?

Beloved, this world is full of "mice"—innocent souls trapped not because they wanted to destroy anything, but because they were just trying to survive.

That boy who stole your phone may have lost both parents.

That girl in makeup and tight jeans may be the breadwinner of her family.

That man who sleeps under the bridge may once have been a promising young graduate—until life dealt him a bad card.

Let me ask you sincerely:

How many people have you judged lately without understanding their hunger?

How many "mice" have you set traps for in your heart—silently condemning them because their scars were too messy for your clean world?

The Bible says in Proverbs 21:13, “Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.”

Every soul you ignore, every cry you silence, every pain you mock—you’re setting a trap for your own day of hunger.

My dear friend, life is deeper than appearances.

Sometimes, all a person needs is a listening ear, a plate of food, a kind word, or even just a smile.

Don’t be too quick to condemn.
Don’t let your heart become a trap.

Choose mercy. 👌
Choose kindness.🙌
Choose love.🎉

Do you know that, the small mouse in that image... Is....

That’s someone in your street today.
That’s a child in your church.
That’s your neighbour.
That could be you tomorrow.

Let this message touch your heart.

And if it does, don’t scroll away in silence.
Share it. Let the world know that not everyone who falls is evil. Some were just hungry.

Message from the Founder

At TERUA Youth Foundation, my heart beats with a deep conviction that our children, adolescents, young people, and women deserve more than just survival — they deserve opportunity, voice, and the chance to shape a brighter tomorrow. I believe that true change begins when we empower people with leadership skills, knowledge, and the courage to dream beyond their limitations.

Everywhere I look in Nigeria and across the world, I see potential — potential waiting to be nurtured, guided, and unleashed. Our young people are not a problem to be solved; they are a solution waiting to rise. Women are not just participants in society; they are pillars of transformation. Children are not just the future; they are the hope we must invest in today.

TERUA Youth Foundation was born out of a desire to create positive change — not just in words but in action. We are committed to building leaders, strengthening capacity, and providing platforms where voices that were once silent can be heard. My passion is to see a generation that refuses to accept the status quo, a generation that is bold enough to reimagine Nigeria and the world at large.

This is more than an organization. It is a movement of hope, courage, and impact. Together, we can nurture leaders who will light up communities, transform systems, and inspire nations. The journey is long, but with passion, faith, and unity, change is possible — and we are here to make it happen.

With hope and determination,
Ruth Akinde.
Founder, TERUA Youth Foundation.
