Climate Change in Nigeria: Our Call to Action

Ladies and Gentlemen, Distinguished Guests, and Fellow Advocates,

It is both an honor and a responsibility to speak to you today about one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change—a challenge that does not recognize borders, affects every community, and threatens the very foundation of our future.

In Nigeria, the impacts of climate change are no longer distant predictions; they are realities we face daily. Rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and devastating floods have disrupted our agriculture, strained our water resources, and displaced vulnerable communities. These climate shocks not only threaten our economy—they jeopardize the livelihoods of millions of Nigerians, especially those in rural areas who depend on farming and natural resources for survival.

At Greenlight Future Initiative Organization, we believe that the fight against climate change is not just a government responsibility—it is a shared duty. Our organization works to empower communities to adapt, mitigate, and build resilience. Through projects like tree planting initiatives, sustainable farming practices, youth-led climate education, and renewable energy programs, we are demonstrating that climate action is both possible and essential.

Greenlight Future Initiative Organization Intensifies Climate Action and Youth Empowerment in Nigeria

Benue State — March 2026

The Greenlight Future Initiative Organization, a youth-led nonprofit committed to environmental sustainability, language and culture documentation, and community development, has announced new initiatives aimed at strengthening climate action, promoting environmental education, and empowering young people across Nigeria.

Under the leadership of its founder and Chief Executive Officer, Aondongusha Joshua Tsar, the organization continues to expand its impact through innovative programs focused on tree planting, climate awareness, and youth engagement in sustainable development.

Advancing Climate Action Through Tree Planting

One of the flagship programs of the organization is its Tree Planting and Environmental Restoration Project, designed to combat deforestation, improve biodiversity, and contribute to climate change mitigation. The project mobilizes volunteers, students, and community members to plant trees while also educating them about the importance of protecting the environment.

Speaking about the initiative, Aondongusha Joshua Tsar emphasized that climate action must begin at the grassroots level.

“Communities must be empowered with knowledge and practical solutions to protect their environment. Planting trees is not just about restoring the land—it is about securing the future for the next generation,” he said.

🏛️ AFLC 2026 Session Spotlight: Museums as Living Archives

Language loss isn't just about words disappearing. It's about losing entire systems of knowledge, culture, and identity. For the Tiv people of central Nigeria, a proposed museum offers a way to fight back.

Aondongusha Tsar presents a vision for the Tiv Museum as more than just a building. It's a strategic tool for linguistic documentation, cultural education, and intergenerational knowledge transfer. Building on the newly compiled Comprehensive Tiv Dictionary, this session shows how linguistic archives, oral histories, artifacts, and art can work together to preserve Tiv identity.

Aondongusha is a linguist and researcher specializing in language documentation, cultural preservation, and community-based development. Through the Greenlight Future Initiative, he leads projects on endangered languages, education, and sustainable community empowerment.
