On the 12th of May ,2026The flag-off of Lenacapavir (LEN) in Benue State marks a significant milestone in the state’s HIV prevention response and demonstrates a renewed commitment to reducing new HIV infections among vulnerable and key populations. It symbolizes hope, innovation, and progress in the fight against HIV, it reflects the collective efforts of government agencies, healthcare workers, civil society organizations, community-based organizations, and key population networks working tirelessly to ensure equitable access to HIV prevention services. The intervention is expected to improve prevention uptake, reduce stigma associated with daily medication use, and enhance adherence through its convenient twice-yearly dosing schedule.
Lenacapavir is a long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) administered twice yearly for HIV prevention. The introduction of this intervention provides an additional prevention option for individuals at substantial risk of HIV infection, especially those who may experience challenges with adherence to daily oral PrEP due to stigma, mobility, access barriers, or other socio-economic factors.
Benue State is among the states prioritized for the implementation following readiness assessments and strategic planning at national and sub-national levels
