In the heart of Borno, where the winds carry whispers of resilience, women rise, steadfast, unwavering in the face of hardship. The rains had come fierce and unrelenting, leaving Maiduguri submerged in grief. Floodwaters swept through the streets, swallowing homes, dreams, and the fragile hopes of the vulnerable. But in the midst of the storm, the Borno State network of women-Led organizations (BONWOC) became a beacon of light.

With hands accustomed to healing, we moved swiftly, our hearts pulsing with urgency. Across the drenched land, we responded to the cries of mothers, the silent pleas of children. Our mission: to restore dignity, to nurture souls shattered by disaster. In communal kitchens, the smell of hope simmered in the air as they cooked meals—warm, nourishing, each pot a promise of care. Each bowl passed into their palms carried not just food, but solace, a reminder that even in their suffering, they were not forgotten. Our Goal putting smiles on the faces of children with an assurance and hope for tomorrow.

In Borno, where pain has too often etched its mark, BONWOC rose like the dawn, our response a hymn of hope that echoed across the broken landscape, promising that no storm, no flood, could wash away the power of unity.

The recent flooding in Maiduguri, triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam, has had a devastating impact, displacing over 200,000 residents and submerging large parts of the city. This crisis has prompted an urgent need for humanitarian assistance, particularly for those residing in affected areas. The flood has disrupted businesses, destroyed homes, and affected critical infrastructure like schools, market places and places of business.

In response, Borno State network of Women-Led Civil Society organizations (BONWOC) funded by UNwomen have been pivotal in providing emergency support to internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the Aisha Buhari Mega School New GRA IDP camp. The network has organized wet feeding programs, providing cooked meals to flood victims as an immediate relief measure as well as clean drinking water. The emphasis on wet feeding highlights the urgency of addressing hunger among displaced families, especially women and children who are among the most vulnerable.
