To reduce flood risk in cities, we need to engineer a system that intercepts rainfall, pumps water deep into the ground, stabilises riverbanks, and makes cities more pleasant to live in year-round.๐Ÿ™๏ธ

Wait a moment... Nature has already designed a system that does all that, and more: trees.
We just need to plant more of them. ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ

Here's how trees reduce flood risk:
๐ŸŒง๏ธ Intercepting rainfall
A forest canopy catches and slows rain before it reaches the ground โ€“ reducing peak river levels during storms and buying critical time for soil absorption.

๐ŸŒฑ The sponge effect
Tree roots channel deep into soil, drawing surface water down and away from rivers and drainage systems. Forested catchments consistently show lower runoff than bare land, even during heavy rainfall events.

๐Ÿชจ Stabilising riverbanks and preventing erosion
Roots bind soil, trap sediment in upper catchments, and keep waterways clear. That directly protects a river's capacity to carry floodwater โ€“ long after the rain has stopped.

Catchment studies and tree-planting programmes along flood-prone rivers in the United Kingdom show measurable reductions in surface runoff where woodland is present or restored.

๐ŸŒณTrees are nature-based flood risk engineering โ€“ and they belong in every urban flood risk management strategy as a recognised, costed, and planned component.

Happy International Womenโ€™s Day! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š

Today, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions of women across the world who are shaping a more sustainable and equitable future.

At GreeniHAD (Green Initiative for Humanitarian Aid and Development), we recognize that women are powerful agents of environmental stewardship, community resilience, and sustainable development. From nurturing forests and protecting biodiversity to leading climate action and driving grassroots change, women continue to play a vital role in safeguarding our planet.

As we mark this yearโ€™s International Womenโ€™s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting women and girls in environmental leadership, climate advocacy, and sustainable livelihoods.

Together, let us empower women, nurture nature, and build a greener, more resilient world for generations to come.

We may speak thousands of languages but we all call this planet home. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’š

Across the world, words carry stories, culture, and wisdom.
Many of them are rooted in land, rivers, forests, and sky.

The way we speak shapes the way we see.
And the way we act shapes the world we leave behind.

Because while our languages are beautifully different,
care for our Earth is universal.

This , letโ€™s celebrate the voices that connect us and
speak up for the one home we all share.
