RAISING TOTAL (WELL-ROUNDED) CHILDREN.

GUARDING CHILDREN AGAINST VICES (7).

We are you back to our series.
In this post, we are focusing on the vice of INDOLENCE. This means laziness or slothfulness.
Indolent people do not want to exert themselves. They would rather be idle than make efforts to achieve something.

Parents must let children know the importance of diligence and self reliance, which in this sense is not about pride, but about not being a burden to others.

Laziness is a terrible lifestyle which hinders people from maximising their potentials.

Many adults are in this category. They missed several opportunities and abused privileges due to slothfulness. They now need to depend on others for survival.

Parents must help their children by giving them every needed support and motivation to ensure they overcome every trait of laziness- in academics, house chores and other activities.

Lazy people end up without dignity. This must be avoided by all means.

RAISING TOTAL (WELL-ROUNDED) CHILDREN.

GUARDING CHILDREN AGAINST VICES (6).

So far in this series, we have discussed AVARICE, SELFISHNESS, IMPATIENCE AND ANGER. In this post, we will consider PRIDE.

I was reluctant to write on this topic, especially because of parents with little children as we do not expect little ones to exhibit this vice. However, I realized that the proud or arrogant teenager, youth, young and full adults did not become proud overnight.
The traits would have been there from childhood.

Below are some characteristics that end in pride:

1.Overconfidence/exaggerated self esteem - believing one is the wisest/best person.
2. Boasting/ Arrogating success to self only.3. Despising/judging other people.
4. Not accepting people for who they are
5. Refusing correction/advice
6. Never willing to apologise.

Parents must be very observant in order to nip such traits in the bud. We should not assume that they will outgrow them. Rather, we must be intentional about counselling and praying for/with them until the virtue of humility is formed in them.

RAISING TOTAL (WELL-ROUNDED) CHILDREN.

GUARDING CHILDREN AGAINST VICES (5).

In continuation of our series on Vices, we will be discussing ANGER.

Anger is a reaction to something annoying or upsetting. It is an expression of emotions. It is okay to express emotions rather than bottle them in.
However, anger should be managed, controlled and aggression free.

One cannot control people's character and attitude, but one can be in control of his or her reactions.

Sometimes, what annoys one could even be a misunderstanding or cultural difference.

Children should understand that they will come across people with different cultures, characters, backgrounds and upbringing in life. There is need to be accommodating and patient in relating with everyone.

If children grow up with uncontrolled Anger, they will grow into irritable adults who cannot maintain relationships in the family, at work and in the community. It can also affect their progress at work due to low appraisal.

Offences should be handled calmly by communicating with the person concerned, not by outbursts of Anger.

RAISING TOTAL (WELL-ROUNDED) CHILDREN.

GUARDING CHILDREN AGAINST VICES.(4).

We have been discussing about doing our best as parents to ensure children grow with virtues, not vices.

We have talked about Avarice and Selfishness. The next is IMPATIENCE, which is defined as being restless, irritable, easily annoyed, always eager and not willing to wait for something to happen in due course.

This is one vice that, as parents, we must first examine ourselves and if lacking, determine to imbibe it, then model it to our children.

These are the days of "instant" everything. Everyone is in a hurry- on the road, at home, at work, in the church, at the store and everywhere. Everyone also wants expectations to be fulfilled instantly.

The reality of life however is that the virtue of Patience is a necessity. Children must be brought up with the understanding that things don't happen 'automatically' and that whatever will last takes a process.

Patience helps in good decision making while Impatience leads to hasty decisions and makes one's life stressful.

The earlier children know these, the better equipped for life they will be.
