Ambassadors we make!

Executing a project is one of the easiest things trained project managers and coordinators can do. However, sustainability is usually a different ball game, and even experts struggle with it.

Recognizing the need for our programs to impact the community long after our volunteers have left is one of the most important parts of project design at VTS.

For example, during the VTS WASH Project carried out by the VTS Educational Team, we trained WASH Ambassadors who take the lead in helping their peers maintain the highest possible standards of hygiene. Through effective monitoring and evaluation of the progress of the WASH clubs established in schools, we ensure that our projects are not one-off activities, but initiatives that leave the community better than we met them.

The VTS Foster Care Project, the team on Voice to the Street that is entirely focused on ensuring that vulnerable children complete formal educational held its quarterly counselling session last week Friday.

Talking with some of the children in the project, we were able to learn about their fears, concerns and the challenges they are facing in the community, school and their studies. It was a thrilling session where we also got to learn about their friends, teachers and the subjects they enjoyed the most, amongst other things. The children were also given the chance to talk about aspects of their studies that they felt were difficult.

After all was said and appropriate counsel was given, we had an extensive chat with some of the school administrator to identify the hurdles, both in and out of school the children were battling with. At the end, we ensured that we left them better focused on what was most important – their education!

Give to Gain: Why Supporting Women and Girls Strengthens Society

The conversation does not end when the day does.
Last week, the world paused to honor women. At Voice to the Street, we believe that honoring women lies in continued action, honest dialogue, and showing up long after the hashtags fade. That is exactly what this live session is about.

Our host David will be joined by Opeyimika for a grounded, insightful conversation on what it truly means to invest in women and girls and why doing so strengthens entire communities, including the vulnerable children we work with every day.

Together, they will be exploring:
- The real barriers women and girls still face today
- What organizations can practically do to support women better
- The role of mentorship, family, and male allies in driving gender equity
- And the one commitment each of us can make to create wider change

And as we head into Mother's Day this Sunday, this one is also for every woman who has given so that others could gain.

We are super excited to tell you about the launch of the VTS Mobile Library Project!!!

We are so thrilled to see the huge community support and buy-in towards the project. From the community heads literally going around to call kids to join the sessions to a local proprietor providing a safe space for the project, we feel the sky is our starting point.

This project aims at improving literacy and fostering a sustainable learning path for children in the community who are struggling to have access to quality education.

The support from our partners, The Centre for African Justice, Peace and Human Right (CAJPHR), The International School of the Hague and Melton Foundation is really enabling us to kick this off. We and the children can’t thank them enough.

We know one thing is certain, with the community support and sustainability bits embedded in this project, we will leave the children better than we met them.

Give to gain!

In this session from our VTS Entrepreneurship Project session, one of our volunteers, a capable woman, shared her skill, time, and knowledge by teaching makeup artistry to street children. What started as a simple class became a moment of confidence, creativity, and possibility.

This is the spirit of International Women’s Day — when women lift others, communities grow stronger.

At Voice to the Street, we believe empowerment is contagious. When knowledge is shared, lives are changed and we leave them better than we met them.

The VTS Cloth Drive

A constant feature of the VTS Annual project is the Cloth Drive. During these sessions, donated clothes from around the world gets into the hands of our beneficiaries and others in the community that really need it.

We know that our street children need education. It is important. However, there are things that reduce the burden of anxiety from the minds and hearts of those we serve. And good clothes are one of those things.

This is why our interventions are all-rounded, and it is the only way we can leave them better than we met them.

Do you know that literacy can be learnt through art?

When children create art, they have the chance to express ideas, tell stories and convey messages. All these involve literacy skills.

Innovating learning is key, because when kids are excited about learning, it is easier to keep them coming back to school. Our current interventions keep this as a focal point. Learning doesn't have to be boring!

The VTS Educational Project has sponsored WASH projects within the schools in slum communities, ensuring that children take the lead in teaching their peers how to stay clean and healthy. By appointing VTS WASH Ambassadors, we ensure that the communities stay healthy with fewer sick children. Long live the art of WASHing, which leaves our children better than we met them

There is dignity in hard work, in good work!

It is Monday again, one of the most unwanted days of the week. The working generation have come to despise it and somehow wish it could be skipped. However, no one has a choice. Survival depends on it, on work.

For children on the street, we know how much education can empower them, however, how do we deal with the barriers they face to quality education?

The VTS Entrepreneurship project stands to ensure that one of those barriers is removed. Be it through bag, bead, dress, hair or shoe making, make-up training or photography, we ensure that they gain relevant skill that gives them dignity and benefits them and their communities.

Reframing reality?

Here is how we do it:
Going beyond sparking curiosity, we effectively redirecting it. Several children our interventions have reached already have phones; hence, we target transforming scrolling into learning. Our children don't need to abandon their world to grow, what they need is guidance to see it differently.

Through the VTS StreetTech Project, we help them reclaim social media as a bridge back to their communities, not a barrier from it. Their curiosity hasn't changed but their priorities have.

Take note of the values gained in these cute words of appreciation by one of the students after a training session.

It is not always about STRATEGY...

Over the years, we've learnt that successful and sustainable projects are about strategizing with the right people and in our case, these include the children we serve, their community leaders and other very important stakeholders who will ensure that projects make the deepest impacts. We have gone from sitting at our offices to develop intervention programs to working with community members and stakeholders to develop solutions that lasts and can be continued in our absence.

This is the new strategy:
To leave them better than we met them
