Nigeria does not have a shortage of young people with ideas.

What we often lack is enough intentional investment in helping those ideas grow into competence, character and public responsibility.

Leadership is not something we should start thinking about when election season arrives. It starts much earlier, through conversations, mentorship, civic education, exposure and opportunities to serve.

And honestly, complaining about “the leaders of tomorrow” while refusing to help prepare them is a bit like complaining about the harvest after refusing to plant.

If we want better public leadership in Nigeria and across Africa, we have to play a part in preparing the people who will eventually serve.

Election day is only one moment in a much longer process.

The choices made months before learning the issues, checking the facts, understanding the candidates, getting your voter credentials in order and deciding what values matter to you can shape how meaningful that moment becomes.

For Christians, civic responsibility should not stop at praying for good leaders.

It also means becoming informed citizens, participating peacefully and being willing to serve when called.

And no, you don't need to become a political “warrior” on WhatsApp.

You simply need to be informed enough to make your voice count.

Politics will affect our schools, businesses, communities, security and everyday lives whether we discuss it or not.

So perhaps the better question is not, “Should I be interested in politics?”

It is, “How can I participate responsibly?”

For Christians, that can mean knowing the issues, understanding how government works, asking better questions, showing up at the polls and, for some, stepping forward to serve.

You don't have to join a party to care about your country.

And you don't need to shout the loudest to make a difference.

Sometimes, responsible citizenship simply starts with being informed enough to make your voice count.

Nigeria needs citizens who don't just pray for better leadership, but are also prepared to recognise, support and model it.

Your faith can shape your values. Your participation can shape your community.

Leadership becomes meaningful when people can see its impact in everyday life.

It can look like mentoring a young person, improving a community initiative, speaking up when something is wrong, or simply choosing responsibility when nobody is watching.

Nigeria does not only need people who want positions. We need people prepared to carry the responsibility that comes with influence.

If you have influence, use it well. If you have a platform, use it to serve. If you have an opportunity to lead, leave people better than you met them.

Politics is too important to leave entirely to politicians.

Whether you are a voter, community leader, professional, young person or aspiring public servant, democracy works better when citizens understand how government works and take their civic responsibilities seriously.

In Nigeria, that means asking better questions, understanding the issues, checking the record of those seeking public office and refusing to trade long-term public interest for short-term benefits.

Faith can shape our values. Citizenship gives us a responsibility to put those values into practice through service, participation and accountability.

You do not have to belong to a political party to care about who governs.

You simply have to care about what happens to your community.

The challenge is that decisions affecting our schools, businesses, places of worship, communities and future will still be made with or without our voice.

Nation-building is not reserved for a select few. It begins with informed citizens who choose to participate, ask thoughtful questions, register, vote and lead with character.

Nigeria is not lacking talented people.

Every day, professionals, entrepreneurs, teachers, doctors, engineers, lawyers and innovators solve complex problems in their workplaces. Imagine what could change if more of that experience found its way into public leadership.

Every election season reminds us of one truth: leadership shapes everyday life.

The schools our children attend, the roads we drive on, the opportunities we have and the institutions we trust are all influenced by the quality of leadership.

That is why informed citizens cannot afford to be spectators.

If people of character, conviction and competence stay away from public service, someone else will gladly fill the space.

Nigeria and Africa need more thoughtful citizens who are willing to lead, serve and participate with wisdom, integrity and courage.
