Nigeria's Ranking Among World's Worst for Workers' Rights Calls for Urgent Reflection and Action

NUBIFIE Comments on the 2026 ITUC Global Rights Index

A Vanguard Newspaper report by labour correspondent Victor Ahiuma-Young has highlighted Nigeria’s placement among the 10 worst countries for workers' rights in the 2026 ITUC Global Rights Index. The report raises serious concerns on trade union independence, freedom of association, collective bargaining, and anti-union practices in public + private sectors.

For NUBIFIE, this ranking is more than a statistic. It’s a reminder that workers’ rights are central to building a fair, productive, and prosperous nation. No economy can thrive on investment and infrastructure alone. Workers must be free to exercise their rights and participate in decisions affecting their welfare.

The issues raised call for careful reflection by govt, employers, and labour. Protecting trade union freedoms, strengthening social dialogue, and enforcing labour laws at all levels is non-negotiable. A workplace built on mutual respect, fairness, and justice benefits everyone.

NUBIFIE believes Nigeria has the capacity and institutions to improve. What’s needed now is genuine commitment from all stakeholders to uphold decent work, collective bargaining, and freedom of association.

As advocates for workers in banking, insurance, and financial services, we reaffirm our commitment to defending workers' rights. The concerns in the ITUC report should be a catalyst for dialogue and reforms that strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s labour environment and improve worker well-being across all sectors.

Nigeria’s POS Operators Raise Alarm Over Rising Costs, Policies

POS operators in Nigeria have warned that rising operational costs, cash scarcity, insecurity, and unfavorable policies are threatening the sustainability of agency banking services across the country.

Speaking on TRADE FM’s Business Breakfast Briefing, Association of Mobile Banking Operators (AMBO) National Chairman, Comrade Odetunde Olawale, said many Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) policies are introduced without adequate consultation with operators despite their critical role in driving financial inclusion, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.

Olawale identified cash liquidity as a major challenge, noting that operators still rely heavily on physical cash and sometimes resort to informal sourcing methods to sustain daily transactions.

He also highlighted growing security threats, including fraud and robbery, alongside multiple deductions from bank charges, company fees, logistics, and regulatory transaction costs that continue to reduce operators’ profits.

According to him, transaction charges for ₦1,000 to ₦10,000 transfers accumulate quickly, while economic hardship prevents agents from increasing customer fees beyond the ₦100 to ₦150 commonly charged per transaction.

The AMBO chairman further criticized proposed exclusivity policies that could limit agents to single service providers, warning that such measures may increase downtime risks during network failures.

He called for more inclusive policymaking and urged regulators to engage industry associations before introducing new frameworks, warning that continued pressure could threaten business sustainability, jobs, and financial inclusion efforts in Nigeria.

NUBIFIE RAISES ALARM OVER ESCALATING INSECURITY AND ITS IMPACT ON WORKERS AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) wishes to express grave concern over the worsening security situation across Nigeria.

Pursuant to its constitutional mandate to protect and promote the welfare, safety, dignity, and interests of its members, the Union can no longer remain silent in the face of the persistent and escalating threats posed by kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, armed robbery, communal violence, and other criminal activities. These incidents continue to endanger the lives and livelihoods of Nigerian workers and citizens nationwide.

NUBIFIE notes that security is a fundamental prerequisite for economic growth, industrial harmony, social stability, and sustainable national development. No meaningful progress can be achieved in an environment where citizens live in constant fear and are unable to work, travel, or conduct legitimate business activities without the risk of attack or abduction. The prevailing insecurity has severely affected productivity, discouraged both local and foreign investment, increased the cost of doing business, and imposed significant psychological and financial burdens on workers and their families.

We therefore call on the Federal Government to urgently strengthen the nation's security architecture through enhanced intelligence gathering and effective utilization of intelligence, improved inter-agency coordination, the deployment of modern security technology, and the provision of adequate welfare and operational support for security personnel. The Union also urges all levels of government to decisively address the underlying socio-economic drivers of insecurity, particularly youth unemployment, poverty, inequality, and social dislocation.

In addition, NUBIFIE advocates stronger community engagement, more effective policing strategies, improved border management, and the swift investigation, prosecution, and punishment of perpetrators. The Union believes that a holistic approach that combines robust law enforcement, prevention, economic empowerment, social inclusion, and national unity is essential to restoring lasting peace and security across the country.

NUBIFIE stands in solidarity with all victims of insecurity across Nigeria. We are especially concerned about workers and their families, schoolchildren, students, and innocent citizens who have suffered loss, injury, displacement, or trauma as a result of criminal activities. Our thoughts are with the victims of recent kidnapping incidents, including the abducted students in Oyo State and all others who remain in captivity across the country.

We offer heartfelt prayers for all NUBIFIE members and their families, asking Almighty God to protect them in their homes, workplaces, and during their daily journeys. We pray for comfort, strength, healing, and hope for all those affected by these unfortunate incidents. We further pray for the safe and unconditional release of all persons currently held hostage and for divine protection, wisdom, courage, and strength for our security personnel as they carry out their constitutional responsibilities.

Above all, we pray for Nigeria—that God may grant our nation enduring peace, security, unity, and stability, and that our leaders may be guided by wisdom, courage, integrity, patriotism, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of all citizens.

NUBIFIE remains steadfast in its commitment to the protection of workers' rights, welfare, and dignity. The Union shall continue to advocate for policies and actions that promote peace, security, social justice, economic prosperity, and sustainable national development.

Workers’ Pension Must Be Protected, Not Withheld says NUBIFIE General Secretary

The General Secretary of National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees, Sheikh Muhammad, has welcomed the planned enforcement action by the National Pension Commission and the Nigeria Labour Congress against employers who fail to remit workers’ pension contributions.

He described the move as a bold and necessary step toward defending the rights of workers and restoring confidence in the pension system.

Sheikh Muhammad stated that pension is not a privilege but a worker’s earned entitlement built over years of service, sacrifice and dedication. He noted that when pension contributions are deducted from salaries, they must be remitted without delay, as anything short of that undermines workers’ trust and threatens their future security after retirement.

He stressed that National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees remains fully committed to protecting workers in the banking, insurance and financial institutions sector, particularly on issues affecting welfare, dignity at work and retirement protection.

He further highlighted that under the leadership of Comrade Anthony Abakpa, mni, the union has continued to strengthen its voice in defence of workers’ rights and improved welfare across the industry. He noted that the current leadership remains focused on ensuring that workers are respected, their entitlements protected and employers held accountable to both legal and moral obligations.

Sheikh Muhammad called on employers across the public and private sectors to comply fully with pension remittance obligations, stressing that workers who have dedicated their productive years to building institutions and contributing to the economy deserve peace of mind and dignity in retirement.

He reaffirmed that NUBIFIE will continue to stand workers! Solidarity forever!
