At STAG, we rise with every woman, girl, trans, intersex, and gender-diverse person surviving violence, rejection, and displacement in Nigeria.

We choose solidarity. We choose care. We choose each other.

Over the next days, we’ll open a small window into stories of survivors that encourage us to do the work we’ve done so far.

Our message is simple: where safety begins, violence must end. Where freedom begins, dignity starts.

And we will keep showing up for one another until it does. 🧡✨

At our Safe Houses, healing doesn’t always look peaceful.

Sometimes it’s crying in the shower, and other times it’s painting with trembling hands or living when you don't feel like it.

We have learned and seen that mental health nor healing isn’t a straight road, its curvy, it’s learning to live with the weight and still reach for light.

Here, we hold space for the messy parts of being human, for being trans, for being intersex, for not conforming, and for surviving violence. 💜

— Reflections from STAG

On 15 September, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation launched the campaign to mark the International Day of Democracy. The campaign highlighted that democracy is not only found in institutions and elections, but in the everyday acts of courage and solidarity that people take to protect freedoms.

At STAG Initiative, we were proud to join this global conversation, and for us, democracy is seen in:

> Young trans, intersex, and Gender diverse people in our safe houses choosing to speak and live their truth.

> Communities demanding climate justice and inclusive policies that protect the most vulnerable.

> Acts of solidarity where silenced voices are defended and amplified.

These are the small yet powerful ways democracy lives in our work and in the lives of those we serve. They remind us that democracy is real, urgent, and only meaningful when it includes those at the margins.

As part of the global CIVICUS network, STAG will continue to carry this spirit forward. Beyond Democracy Day, we remain committed to building a future where justice, dignity, and inclusion define democracy in practice.
