Strengthening the Structure of Our Movement

Today, leaders of the Nigeria Slum/Informal Settlement Federation, affiliated with SDI, gathered at the Federation Office to discuss and strengthen the structure of our movement.

During the meeting, leaders who will work alongside the President to advance the Federation's vision and coordinate activities across communities were selected. The gathering also provided an opportunity to reflect on leadership, representation, collective decision-making, and the important role of savings groups in building a stronger and more inclusive movement.

We are stronger together, and by working collectively, we are better equipped to amplify community voices, promote grassroots leadership, and drive sustainable change in our communities.

Nigeria Federation leaders, the Chairman, and representatives from savings groups across our communities came together at the Federation Office for a productive General Meeting.

The gathering provided an opportunity to strengthen coordination, review ongoing activities, share updates from savings groups, and collectively plan the way forward.

Together, we continue to build stronger communities through collective action, savings, leadership, and community-driven development.

📌SDI Network News I Bimbo Oshobe , President of the SDI Nigeria Federation asked, “Where are the low income homes that we can afford? Why push us onto the streets by forcing us out of our homes? Slum upgrading can be done with us, by us, if government gives support and resources. Forcing us out of our homes, with nowhere to go but under bridges, only creates more slums.”

Growing stronger through partnership and shared leadership.

The leaders of the Nigeria Slum/Informal Settlement Federation and SHEF the supporting NGO come together to reflect, learn, and plan for the work ahead.

This month's meeting provided an opportunity to review ongoing community initiatives, celebrate progress, discuss emerging challenges, and strengthen strategies that will improve the lives of residents across federation communities.

More than just a meeting, it was a space for dialogue, accountability, and collective decision-making—ensuring that community voices remain at the heart of every action and every plan.

Together, we continue to build stronger partnerships, empower communities, and advance community-led development.

Resilience is built when people come together.

What does it take to prepare a community for tomorrow's challenges? It starts with listening, learning, and working together.

That spirit was evident as the Lagos State Resilience Office (LASRO), in partnership with the Resilient Cities Network and Arup, brought together government agencies, development partners, academia, civil society, and representatives of the Nigeria Slum/Informal Settlement Federation (NSISF) to explore how communities can become more resilient.

The Ajegunle-Ikorodu community of the Nigeria Slum/Informal Settlement Federation served as the case study for the workshop. The Community Resilience Action Plan, initiated through the support of Heinrich Böll Stiftung (HBS) and the Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development, University of Lagos (UNILAG), provided the foundation for discussions. Participants reflected on progress, shared lessons from implementation, and identified practical actions to further strengthen the community's resilience to future shocks and stresses.

The workshop was more than a meeting—it was a reminder that resilient communities are built through strong partnerships, local knowledge, and collective action. When communities, government, academia, and development partners work together, lasting resilience becomes possible.

Together, we're laying the foundation for safer, stronger, and more resilient communities across Lagos.

Not every act of change begins with a big event—sometimes, it starts with a few dedicated people showing up for their community.

Members of the Nigeria Slum/Informal Settlement Federation (NSISF) Waste Investigators in Ajegunle gathered at the Waste Collection Hub along Ikorodu Road with a shared purpose: to keep their environment clean and encourage responsible waste management.

The team cleaned the mini farm around the hub, restoring the space and making it more welcoming. They also collected plastic waste from community members, demonstrating that every bottle and every piece of recyclable plastic has value when properly managed.

This effort is more than a cleanup exercise. It reflects the growing commitment of residents to take ownership of their environment, reduce pollution, and promote a culture of recycling and sustainability. Through collective action, communities are proving that lasting environmental change begins with local leadership and everyday participation.

Together, we are building cleaner, greener, and more resilient communities—one cleanup, one collection, and one action at a time. 🌱♻️

The President of the Nigerian Federation was honored to be invited to the African International Housing Show (AIHS) in Abuja, one of Africa's foremost platforms for dialogue and innovation in the housing and urban development sector.

The event brought together government officials, policymakers, housing professionals, development partners, private sector leaders, and community representatives to explore practical solutions for addressing Africa's housing deficit and promoting sustainable, inclusive cities.

Representing the voices of grassroots communities, the Federation President highlighted the importance of community-led development, secure land tenure, affordable housing, and meaningful participation of informal settlement residents in shaping housing policies. The engagement also provided an opportunity to strengthen partnerships, share the Federation's experiences, and advocate for people-centered approaches to housing and urban resilience.

The Nigerian Federation remains committed to working with stakeholders at all levels to advance inclusive housing solutions that ensure no community is left behind.
