MIRRORS and MITIGATION – Episode 4
Ify’s Kitchen on Infertility and Finding Comfort in Cooking 🍃
About two months ago, Barrister Ifeyinwa Mogekwu, popularly known as Ify’s Kitchen, sat down with Ifedayo Agoro (diaryofanaijagirl) to discuss a very important topic: infertility.
I initially knew Ify through her cooking content, and I was glad she was open to discussing her travails so that others could find comfort in her story.
Her experience mirrors that of many women on their fertility journey. She went through numerous invasive procedures at hospitals, but nothing seemed to work. She recalled frequently visiting a church near her office, where she could cry and pray without being seen. It became a source of comfort for her.
At some point, she stopped posting photos of her nephews on social media because she felt people would be silently judging her situation. She also stopped celebrating her anniversaries online, fearing that people were silently counting the years. Instead, she focused on posting her food content.
Cooking became a form of therapy—a way to distract herself. Despite the tears shed behind closed doors, she continued to show up for herself and her work.
In her own words:
“I knew for certain that this time in my life would pass. I was going to have a child, so I didn’t want a situation where, because of my current circumstances, I stopped doing other things.”
She was conscious of the fact that life doesn’t pause. She understood she was going through a phase—and that it would come to an end. In the meantime, she was determined to keep making progress.
Her strongest support came from her husband, who never lost faith and stood by her unwaveringly through it all.
Today, Ify is a proud mother of twins, conceived through IVF after several years of marriage.
My major takeaway from Ify’s story?
Get busy while you wait for your miracle.
