*The Politics of Loyalty: Gov. AA vs Sen. Saliu Mustapha*
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has been embroiled in a factional dispute since its collective victory in 2019. The party split into two factions, one led by the then-party State Chairman, Hon Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa (BOB), and the other loyal to the state governor. This division left party members in a dilemma, unsure of who to follow and what the consequences of their choices might be.
Kayode Ogunlowo, a vibrant part guy from Kwara South, was in front among those that quickly choose their tent. He was glad to go with BOB and Lai Muhammed faction. Today, he counts his blessing in folds and become hero of his choice. Okunlola Balogun, the Ex-Local Government party Youth Leader from Ilorin South, remained loyal to the governor despite the pressure and decision of other three Youth Leaders from Kwara Central to go with BOB faction; he stood with Gov. AA but was later humiliated out of his post. In contrast, those who followed the BOB faction reaped benefits. Balogun's replacement is now a core loyalist of Senator Saliu Mustapha and has gained significantly from his association.
Two instances highlight the consequences of choosing loyalty to the governor over the BOB faction.
The dynamics within the APC in Kwara State have shifted. The dispute is no longer between BOB and the governor but between Senator Saliu Mustapha and the Executive Governor of the State. As the 2027 elections approach, party members must make informed decisions about who to support.
Party members are advised not to listen to those who cannot guarantee them benefits. Instead, they should be free to choose their path and who to stand with. The fate of their political careers and the future of the party hang in the balance. As Kayode Ogunlowo has demonstrated, acting independently and following one's conscience can lead to greater benefits and a clearer conscience.
Think twice!
