Periods are normal. Shame should not be.

This World Menstrual Hygiene Day, we are reminded that menstrual health is connected to dignity, confidence and wellbeing. No one should miss school, hide in shame or feel excluded because of their period.

Let us continue building communities where conversations about menstruation are open, informed and stigma-free.

Care work keeps homes, communities, and economies running, yet it is still undervalued.

Women continue to carry most unpaid care responsibilities, from childcare and elder care to cooking, cleaning, and emotional support. Even paid care work is often underpaid and overlooked.

When we talk about labour and economic growth, care work must be part of the conversation.

Care is work. It deserves recognition, protection and fair pay.

Climate change is already shaping daily life in Nigeria. Flooding, rising heat and environmental decline are affecting communities in real ways, but the impact is not equal. Women and vulnerable groups often face the greatest risk.

Protecting the environment is also about protecting people. Small actions matter and collective action matters more.

Climate change is already affecting communities across Nigeria, but its impact is not the same for everyone.

In Cross River State, flooding, erosion and forest loss are disrupting livelihoods and increasing vulnerability. Women, particularly in rural and riverine areas, are often the most affected, yet remain underrepresented in climate decision making.

Our new toolkit, Why Climate Governance Must Centre Women in Nigeria, explores how governance systems shape who is protected and who is left out. It also provides practical recommendations for Ministries, Emergency Management Agencies and State Legislatures.

This work is informed by recent engagement with women and young people in Calabar South, who shared their experiences of climate impact and limited participation in policy processes.

Today is International Women’s Day.

This year’s theme is Rights. Justice. Action. for all women and girls.

Around the world, women have organised, resisted and built movements that continue to shape the fight for equality. The progress we see today is the result of generations who demanded dignity, safety and opportunity.

But the work is not finished.

For millions of women and girls, rights remain contested, justice is delayed and action is still needed.

We remain committed to advancing gender justice and safer communities where every woman and girl can live with dignity.

March is Women’s Month.

It emerged from labour organising, political resistance and demands for equal rights.

International Women’s Day, observed on 8 March, was formally recognised by the United Nations in 1975. Its roots trace back to early 20th century movements where women demanded fair wages, safer working conditions and political participation.

Women’s Month should prompt reflection. Are laws working. Are institutions responsive. Are budgets aligned with gender commitments.

At the Centre for Gender Equity and Community Safety, we approach this month as a call to strengthen and communities.
