BE YOURSELF

TEXT: John 1:19–20

Because John the Baptist was such a powerful preacher and had a big following, people assumed that he must be the Son of God who had come into the world to save the world.

John was very confident in his identity.

He knew that he was not the Son of God and that he had a role to play in helping the world get ready to receive Jesus and his message.

There is a lot of pressure for us to do and be something that we aren’t.

Sometimes we think we have to be smarter or thinner or wealthier in order to be happy.

It’s hard to feel joyful when we’re constantly comparing ourselves to others.

In reality, God wants you to be yourself and nobody else.

God has created you to be uniquely you and has given you everything you need to be the best version of yourself possible.

The world needs you to be you!

HELP IN TIME OF TROUBLE

TEXT: Psalm 9:13–14

When do you cry out to God for help?

If we're honest, we most often want God to help us when we're in trouble.

Sometimes we want God to help us be successful, be liked by others, or to get out of the consequences of bad choices we may have made.

Often, we cry out for God to help for self–centered reasons.

David, however, wanted help from God so that justice would be restored to Israel and so that he could show others God's power and faithfulness.

What are the situations in our world today that we should be crying out to God for?

We live in a world in need of God's healing.

Pray for eyes to see poverty, homelessness, discrimination, racism, abuse, and violence.

And then ask for hands and feet that will work in concert with God's Spirit to bring about justice and healing for God's glory and honor!

One day you notice The wound is still there But it no longer controls the room. That is how healing happens Not through forgetting But through freedom

PRAISE HIM! PRAISE HIM!!

TEXT: Psalm 9:11–12

How often do we take the time to praise God outside of church worship?

Praise is expressing to God our appreciation for God's worth.

It is like saying “thank you” for who God is.

When there is gratitude in our hearts, we will naturally want to express it outwardly.

What we may not think about is that when we praise God, we are actually witnessing!

It's a way we can tell others the story of the “mighty acts” of God in our lives.

What David is praising God for in this Psalm is the nature of God who never forgets God's people's cries for help.

What we notice in David's story is that praising God allows him to let others know of God's faithfulness, especially those who are suffering.

How can we, in our daily lives, be more intentional about praising God?

LAUGHING JOYFULLY

TEXT: Psalm 126:1–3

My grandma is not a doctor, but she always says that laughter is the best medicine.

I’m not a doctor either, but I think she’s absolutely right! Not only is it fun to laugh, but laughter spreads.

It’s hard not to laugh when somebody around you is laughing.

One person starts laughing joyfully about something, and then suddenly the whole room is laughing about it.

The Psalmist tells us that God’s holy people were filled with laughter and shouts of joy.

Even though life was not particularly easy for them, God’s goodness and faithfulness caused them to rejoice.

God did great things for them, and God does great things for us.

All we have to do is pause long enough to see God’s handiwork in the world around us.

Let’s take that pause to look and see God breaking through with joy all around us.

LET GOD HANDLE IT

TEXT: 1 Samuel 17:45–49

This part of the story about David feels like a superhero movie!

A little shepherd boy calls on the power of God, in whom he has complete confidence, and then proceeds to run TOWARDS the giant Philistine to face him.

Wow! He has no superpower like a superhero would, but he has his staff and stones.

That was enough for God to complete the rest of the story.

What if we faced challenges and opportunities the way David did?

How can our story be different if we choose to take the unlikely path that requires more of us than we think we have?

What if we give God more opportunities to show up?

BE COURAGEOUS

TEXT: 1 Samuel 17:40–44

For David, it was his staff and smooth stones that would get him ready for the challenge.

These items represent who he is – a shepherd with experience caring for and protecting his flock of sheep.

Not fancy items, but items he is familiar with and knows how to use well.

Goliath even mocked him because he was just a child!

What about you? What would you grab if you're called to serve?

No matter your talents and gifts, don't let anyone look down on you.

We serve a God who has the power to use seemingly insignificant “items” to accomplish God's amazing story!

All God needs from us is the courage, like David, to bring all of who we are to serve.

DAVID AND SAUL

TEXT: 1 Samuel 17:32–37

Do you identify more with David or Saul in this story?

As a parent, I identify with Saul because my tendency is to protect and make sure that children are safe.

Many of you may identify more with David.

You feel confident in your abilities to solve a problem because you know you have the skills to do it.

Notice that God used both Saul and David, as they are, to write God's story.

Saul and David both made decisions based on what they know about themselves and about God.

David was confident in his skills and his experience, having fought lions and bears.

His confidence was also rooted in his faith in God.

Saul, while initially skeptical that a little boy like David could defeat the Philistine, decided to give David his blessing.

As a result of those decisions, God's story of faithfulness unfolded.

What if we treat each decision we make in life as a way of working with God to make sure that each story leads us and others closer to God's love, mercy, justice, and grace?
