Before Eileen Gu became Eileen Gu, she was simply a child being given opportunities to explore.

Skiing. Music. Sport. Education. Different cultures.

Her story reminds us that we don’t always know which experience will unlock a child’s potential.

Exposure matters.

Sometimes, our role isn’t to decide who a child should become, but to give them enough opportunities to discover who they can become.

Because before the achievement, there is often an opportunity to try.

A Monday thought as we begin a new week.

The little things we say to children can become the big things they believe about themselves.

For parents, educators and caregivers, our words are part of the environment we create around children. A simple encouragement, a patient correction or taking the time to listen can influence how a child begins to see themselves and their abilities.

As we step into a new week, let’s remember that the small moments matter too.

Africa’s education conversation cannot stop at access. We have to talk about learning.

A child being enrolled in school is important. But the bigger question is: what is that child actually learning?

Across the continent, foundational literacy and numeracy remain significant concerns, and the African Union’s Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 2026–2035) places learning outcomes and education transformation firmly on the continental agenda.

So, what does this mean for the people closest to learning — educators?

It means looking beyond “Did I teach it?” and asking:

“Did the child learn it?”

It means identifying learning gaps early.
It means paying attention to language, early childhood development and the quality of instruction.
It means supporting teachers, engaging families and using evidence to understand what is working.

Because foundational learning isn’t about keeping children at the basics.

It is about giving them the foundation to go beyond them.

We explored what Africa’s foundational learning agenda means for educators in this carousel.

Just me and my Monday plans having a little meeting. 😊

There’s the to-do list, the calendar, a few big ideas… and, of course, the things that will probably come up that weren’t on the plan at all.

But that’s the beauty of a new week. You make your plans, show up, and take it one thing at a time.
