🚨 Women’s Health Update: PCOS Has Been Renamed 🚨
After about 14 years of global consultation involving researchers, clinicians, and people living with the condition, Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) is now officially being renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).
Why does this matter?
✨️PCOS has long been primarily perceived as a gynaecological or ovarian disorder. However, mounting research, evidence synthesis, and International Guidelines have shown that PCOS is underpinned by endocrine disturbances in insulin, androgens, neuroendocrine and ovarian hormones.
✨️As such, the term “PCOS” has been criticized for being misleading. Many people with the condition do not actually have ovarian cysts; the name failed to reflect the broader hormonal, metabolic, reproductive, dermatological and psychological features of the disease.
✨️Research led by Prof. Helena Teede, published yesterday in The Lancet revealed that the old terminology contributed to delayed diagnosis, stigma, fragmented care and poor understanding of the condition. The authors argue that aligning nomenclature with scientific evolution will improve accuracy; enhance awareness, diagnosis, care quality, research coherence, and patient experience; while strengthening policy, advocacy, and health outcomes globally.
✨️The new name, PMOS recognizes that this is not just a reproductive issue (as difficult as such diseases are). It is a complex, lifelong endocrine and metabolic condition affecting an estimated 170 million women globally.
For advocates in women’s health, this shift is bigger than semantics.
It represents:
✨ Better recognition of women’s lived experiences
✨ More accurate diagnosis and clinical care
✨ Stronger research and policy advocacy
✨ Reduced stigma around reproductive health conditions
✨ A move toward whole-person healthcare for women and girls
As a patient advocacy organization, we welcome this important step toward language that validates our lived experiences, rather than minimizing them.
So... Congratulations to everyone who played a part in this laudable change!🎊🎉
