: A Story of Hope and Growth

A few months ago, we discharged the Abdul Salam twins from our Nutrition Intervention Programme after supporting them on their journey to better health and nutrition.

Recently, we visited them again, and we were so happy to see that they are still doing well and growing stronger.

Looking back at their before-and-after pictures reminds us of why this work is so important. When they were enrolled in our programme, the twins were stunted and needed nutritional support. With consistent intervention, monitoring, and support, we saw encouraging progress.

But there are still many children in underserved communities who are facing malnutrition and need help.

From Sleeping on the Streets to Standing on Her Own Feet

Last year, we met Victoria Okekule at one of our community outreaches. She was seven months pregnant, homeless, and facing an uncertain future.

Victoria had nowhere to sleep. She was surviving day by day after being abandoned by her husband when she told him she was pregnant.

But that day at our outreach, Victoria found more than healthcare—she found hope.

When she told us her story, we knew we couldn’t just treat her and send her home.

We supported her through her pregnancy and delivery journey. We paid her hospital and delivery bills, supported her when she needed a C-section, provided baby essentials, and helped secure accommodation because she had been sleeping on the streets.

But we didn’t stop there.

After her baby arrived, we paid her child’s school fees and continued supporting her family. And today, we are proud to say that Victoria has been empowered with a means of livelihood so she can begin to rebuild her life and become more financially independent.

From a woman wondering where she would sleep that night…

To a mother with a safe home, a child in school, and a business to depend on.

This is why we do what we do. ❤️

Victoria’s story reminds us that sometimes, all a person needs is someone to believe in them, stand with them, and give them the opportunity to start again.

We are grateful to every donor, partner, volunteer, and supporter who makes stories like Victoria’s possible.

Her journey is not over. This is just the beginning.

Sometimes, impact is simply showing up.

Last week Saturday in Molete, Ibadan, one of our doctors identified a pregnant woman with dangerously high blood pressure during our outreach.

She was hesitant to go to the hospital, but after our doctor explained the seriousness of her condition, she agreed to seek urgent care.

At the hospital, her blood pressure had risen even further. She needed an emergency C-section.

I keep asking myself: What if we hadn’t shown up?

This is why community healthcare matters. People don’t always make it to hospitals, so sometimes, we have to take healthcare to them.

At our first Molete outreach, we reached 200+ women, babies and children with medical consultations, health checks, pre- and post-natal education, mosquito nets, birth kits, baby-care items and nutrition support.

But beyond the numbers, there was one mother whose story could have been very different.

A huge thank you to our medical team, volunteers and IHS Towers for standing with Steer for Change Mother and Newborn Foundation in the fight to reduce maternal and infant mortality in Nigeria.

We keep showing up. We keep serving. We keep saving lives. ❤️

THROWBACK THURSDAY 💙 | IBADAN MEDICAL OUTREACH

Last Saturday, August 8th, we were reminded once again that when communities, healthcare professionals, partners and volunteers come together, lives can be changed. 💙

We took our medical outreach to Molete, Ibadan, Oyo State, reaching more than 200 pregnant women, nursing mothers and children with essential healthcare services, health sensitisation, and pre- and post-natal education.

From medical consultations and health checks to vital health education and support, every interaction reminded us why we do what we do: to ensure that no mother or child is left behind simply because of where they live or what they can afford.

We are deeply grateful to IHS Nigeria , our incredible sponsor and long-standing partner, for believing in our mission and continuing to support our work towards reducing maternal and infant mortality in underserved communities. Your partnership is helping us take quality healthcare closer to the people who need it most. 🙏🏽

To our amazing doctors, nurses, volunteers, team members and everyone who contributed to making this outreach a success—THANK YOU! Your time, expertise and compassion made a difference.

💚 IBADAN, WE’RE BACK!

We returned to Ibadan, Oyo State, and this time, we had the privilege of serving the Molete community for the very first time. And what a beautiful and impactful day it was! 🥹❤️

Our medical outreach reached over 200 pregnant women, nursing mothers, babies and children, providing essential healthcare, education and support to families in the community.

From medical consultations and health checks to health sensitization, pre- and post-natal education, nutrition support, mosquito nets, birth kits and essential baby-care products, we were reminded once again that access to the right information, care and support can make a meaningful difference in the lives of mothers and children. 🤰🏾👶🏾🩺

This outreach was particularly special because it marked our first time in the Molete community and our second outreach in Ibadan this year. We are grateful for the opportunity to keep returning to communities, building trust and reaching more families who need our support.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to our amazing volunteers! 🙌🏾❤️ Your dedication, energy and willingness to serve made the day a success. We truly appreciate every one of you.

This World Breastfeeding Week, Steer for Change Foundation is promoting optimal breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices among mothers across Nigeria to give every child the healthiest possible start in life.

Through community outreach, health education, and awareness campaigns, we are encouraging mothers and caregivers to:
🤱 Initiate breastfeeding within the first hour after birth.
🍼 Practice exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months.
🥣 Introduce safe, nutritious, and age-appropriate complementary foods from six months while continuing breastfeeding up to two years and beyond.

Together, we can empower families with the knowledge and support they need to improve child nutrition, reduce malnutrition, and build healthier communities.

When a family cannot afford a hospital bill, the journey to recovery doesn’t always end—it often becomes another painful struggle.

On 30 July 2026, Steer for Change Mother and Newborn Foundation, with the generous support of IHS, visited Massey Children Hospital and Lagos Island Maternity Hospital to provide hospital bill support for vulnerable mothers and newborns.

What we encountered was heartbreaking. Some babies were still receiving lifesaving treatment, while others had been medically discharged but remained in the hospital because their families could not afford to pay their outstanding bills. For these families, the cost of healthcare had become an unbearable burden.

Through this intervention, we supported 14 vulnerable beneficiaries across the two hospitals, paying a total of ₦2,243,555 in hospital bills:
💙 ₦748,000 at Massey Children Hospital
💙 ₦1,495,555 at Lagos Island Maternity Hospital

This support did more than settle hospital bills—it restored hope, lifted financial burdens, and gave families the chance to focus on healing instead of debt.

Every child deserves access to lifesaving healthcare. Every mother deserves the dignity of taking her baby home without the fear of unpaid medical bills.

We are sincerely grateful to IHS for partnering with us to bring hope and relief to families during one of the most difficult moments of their lives.
