Freedom Restored: Two Young Men Reunited with Society Through Legal Advocacy
Through the dedicated efforts of I AM WHO I AM INTERCESSORS FOUNDATION, we celebrate another milestone in our mission for justice, human rights, and the restoration of dignity.
In January 2020, two young men — Alliu Rilwan and Basit Rasaki — were arrested at separate locations in Alagado, Lagos, Nigeria, on allegations of murder and armed robbery. They were subsequently detained at the Kirikiri Correctional Facility.
During an NGO outreach visit in May 2024, our legal team conducted interviews with the individuals and began a detailed review of their cases. What followed raised serious concerns: it was discovered that both individuals had been in custody since 2020 without being properly produced before any court. Further investigations by our legal team, including searches across the Ministry of Justice and relevant courts in Lagos State, revealed that no traceable case files existed for them.
Acting swiftly in the interest of justice, our legal team filed an application before the court. On the 3rd of February 2025, the court granted the application and ordered the immediate release of both individuals the same day.
This outcome reinforces our commitment to ensuring that no individual is forgotten within the justice system and that due process remains a fundamental right for all.
However, this mission continues.
We rely heavily on the support of well-meaning individuals, partners, and donors to continue providing legal aid, prison visits, case investigations, and rehabilitation support for affected persons.
Your support can help us reach more lives, defend more rights, and restore more freedom.
