Oshodi/Isolo Constituency I: Weighing the Aspirations Within the APC
As the political landscape gradually gathers momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the race for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket to represent the good people of Oshodi/Isolo Constituency I in the House of Representatives is beginning to take shape.
A number of distinguished and credible aspirants have emerged, each bringing unique strengths, experience, and political capital to the table. Among the most prominent names currently in the spotlight are the incumbent Honourable Bashiru Ayinla Dawodu, Idris Bolaji Muse Ariyo (IBMA), Taiwo Ayedun (popularly known as Shanana), and Lawrence Olarenwaju Iyere (LOI).
Below is a brief, objective insight into their political standing, influence, and the conversations surrounding their aspirations.
*Hon. Bashiru Ayinla Dawodu*
Honourable Dawodu currently represents Oshodi/Isolo Constituency I in the House of Representatives and is serving his second term. While he has not formally declared his intention to seek a third term, his constitutional eligibility leaves the door open for a possible return.
As an indigene of Mafoluku, his grassroots appeal and familiarity among constituents remain significant political assets. Incumbency often carries strategic advantages, including experience and the possibility of attaining a ranking position in the House, which could translate into greater influence and benefits for the constituency.
Should he decide to re-enter the race, the question arises: would continuity and experience make him the preferred choice for the party and the people?
*Idris Bolaji Muse Ariyo (IBMA)*
Idris Bolaji Muse Ariyo is a seasoned grassroots politician who previously served two terms as Chairman of Oshodi/Isolo Local Government. Earlier in his career, he worked closely with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a Personal Assistant, and he currently serves as a board member of the South-West Development Commission (SWDC).
Widely regarded as politically connected, IBMA’s proximity to the corridors of power remains evident. His tenure as one of the youngest local government chairmen in Lagos State, combined with his continued engagement at the grassroots level, reinforces his credibility.
With a respected political family background and sustained visibility in the political space, he is undoubtedly a strong contender. However, with the presidential directive requiring political appointees to resign before contesting elections, a key question lingers: will IBMA step down to pursue this ambition?
Furthermore, could a consensus arrangement influenced by party leadership at the national level shape the outcome of this race?
*Lawrence Olarenwaju Iyere (LOI)*
Lawrence Olarenwaju Iyere represents a vibrant, youthful presence in the race. Particularly popular within Shogunle Ward, he is widely known for his philanthropy and community engagement.
A successful entrepreneur, LOI has built a reputation for generosity and people-oriented initiatives. His marital ties to Neya Uzor Kalu, daughter of former Abia State Governor and current Senator, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, further position him within a network of influential political figures.
His active grassroots mobilization and consistent public engagement have strengthened his visibility, while speculations of backing from notable party stakeholders add intrigue to his candidacy.
With his resources, youthfulness, and philanthropic appeal, many are asking: could his connection with the people translate into securing the party’s ticket?
*Taiwo Ayedun (Shanana)*
Taiwo Ayedun, fondly called Shanana, is a seasoned political figure with over two decades of experience in active politics. Beginning his journey in the Alliance for Democracy (AD), he has built a reputation as a loyal and consistent party man.
He has served in various capacities, including as an aide to Hon. Moruf Akinderu Fatai (MAF), a former two-term House of Representatives member and current Lagos State Commissioner for Housing. He also held the position of Senior Special Assistant during the administration of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
With a firm political base in Mafoluku Ward and strong ties to established political structures, Shanana’s candidacy is reportedly supported by influential stakeholders, including figures within the Senate and long-standing party loyalists.
Given his wealth of experience and deep-rooted political network, could he emerge as the party’s consensus or preferred candidate?
*Conclusion*
As the political atmosphere continues to evolve, it is expected that more aspirants may declare their intentions in the coming weeks. However, the current lineup already presents a compelling mix of experience, youth, influence, and grassroots appeal.
Should the party opt against a consensus arrangement and allow a competitive primary, the race promises to be both engaging and unpredictable.
The question remains: who among these aspirants possesses the political dexterity, acceptance, and strategic advantage to emerge victorious?
