On May 13th, our Programs Manager, , represented Headfort Foundation at a consultative meeting convened by the Ogun State office of the National Human Rights Commission on the National Action Plan (NAP) for Human Rights in Nigeria (2024–2028).

The engagement brought together key stakeholders across government and civil society, including MDAs such as the Ministry of Justice, NDLEA, Immigration, Correctional Service, and the Legal Aid Council, alongside CSOs working to advance human rights in Nigeria.

The focus was clear: strengthening the implementation of the NAP as a national framework for the promotion, protection, and accountability of human rights, with the National Human Rights Commission serving as the coordinating and monitoring body.

Beyond dialogue, the session also provided clarity on the roles of both MDAs and CSOs in driving the Plan forward, reinforcing the need for coordination, accountability, and measurable impact.

For Headfort Foundation for justice, the NAP remains a critical tool, not just for advocacy, but for tracking progress, strengthening accountability, and aligning local efforts with global human rights standards.

During the session, we emphasized the importance of intentionally including grassroots communities in the implementation process, because human rights frameworks are only effective when they reach the people they are meant to serve.

The meeting served as a timely call for stronger collaboration and sustained commitment across all stakeholders to ensure that human rights protections move beyond policy into practice.

Today, we celebrate boys, their potential, their growth, and who they are becoming.

But not every boy is growing up in a classroom. Some are growing up behind bars.
Seen. Judged. Forgotten too early.

They deserve protection.
They deserve representation.
They deserve a fair chance.

If we want better men, we have to do better by boys, especially the ones the system overlooks.

Peace is not just the absence of conflict.

It is the presence of justice, dignity, and systems that protect people, especially the most vulnerable.

Because where people are ignored, profiled, or left without protection, peace becomes a performance, not a reality.

On this International Day of Living Together in Peace, we are reminded that peaceful societies are not built on silence, but on accountability, fairness, and the courage to act.

A lawyer. A court appearance. A bail application. A second chance.

For many poor and wrongly imprisoned people, these things remain out of reach without support.

That is why our Fundraising Week matters.
From 25th – 31st May 2026, we are raising support to continue providing access to justice for people who would otherwise be forgotten by the system.

If you’ve ever wanted to be part of something that actually moves the needle… this is it.
You don’t have to wait till the 25th. You can start now.

Some young people don’t just need motivation, they need exposure, direction, and the right conversations.

That’s exactly what this is about.
We’re bringing students into a space where they can start to see what a future in human rights actually looks like, beyond the classroom, beyond theory… into real impact.

Because the truth is, the next generation of advocates won’t just appear.
They have to be raised, guided, and equipped.

If you care about shaping voices that will challenge injustice and lead change, this is something you want to be part of.

For partnership and participation, please reach out. Let’s build this together.

Justice does not happen by chance.

It takes intentional action, difficult conversations, committed advocates, strong institutions, and people willing to do the work, every single day.

This week, may we be reminded that progress is built through action, not assumption. Through consistency, not convenience. Through systems and people willing to stand for what is right, even when it is difficult.

The work continues. ⚖️

Fatima (not real name), a 46-year-old woman from Ibadan, travelled to Ado-Ekiti to visit a friend on March 30th. But when she arrived, she could not reach the friend and had nowhere to stay.
She spent the night on the verandah of a shop, hoping to return home the next morning.

But the next morning, while the shop owner was opening the shop, the padlock reportedly fell off. An alarm was raised. Fatima was accused of theft, beaten by a mob, and arrested.

When the police searched her, nothing was found on her. Yet, she was arrested after the shop owner alleged that 30 litres of vegetable oil worth N60,000 was missing.

On 2nd April 2026, she was arraigned for shop breaking and stealing. Although granted bail, she could not meet the conditions because she had no family in Ado-Ekiti to stand as surety. She was remanded in custody.

We became involved in the matter on 6th May 2026 after one of our volunteers, brought the case to our attention. Our lawyer, , stationed in our justice hub in Ado Ekiti, took up her case to provide legal representation for free.

Before the hearing, we engaged the prosecutor on the troubling circumstances surrounding the case, especially considering that nothing had been found on Fatima and the allegations appeared to rest solely on suspicion.

When the matter came up in court on the 7th of May, the prosecutor informed the court that the nominal complainant had refused to appear in court despite efforts to reach her and had shown no interest in pursuing the matter. We applied for the case to be struck out for want of diligent prosecution. The court granted the application and discharged Fatima.

By then, she had spent 1 month and 5 days in custody.
But even after her release, another reality remained:
Fatima still had nowhere to stay in Ado-Ekiti. So after court, we escorted her to the motor park, put her on a vehicle heading back to Ibadan, and paid her transport fare.

Because sometimes, access to justice goes beyond the courtroom. Sometimes, it looks like making sure someone can finally go home.

Help us continue to stand between vulnerable people and injustice.

Your rights don’t pause because the week is busy.
And accountability doesn’t expire because people get comfortable.

Injustice often survives in silence, when we stop questioning, stop speaking, and start normalizing what should never be normal.

This is your reminder to stay aware. Stay vocal. Stay intentional.

Because rights that are not protected… slowly get ignored.

📌 Save this as a reminder.
📤 Share it with someone who needs to see it.
