11 rejections. One determined young leader.

In 2023, Godwin Lasisi faced 11 rejections while searching for a Place of Primary Assignment (PPA). Instead of giving up, he kept going.

Today, he is a 2024 Youth Activators Lab Fellow, a UNICEF Young Advisor, a Youth Peace Champion, and recently represented Nigeria at the 79th United Nations General Assembly.

In Episode 04 of our YAL Fellow Spotlight, Godwin shares how the Youth Activators Lab helped him strengthen his voice, build meaningful partnerships, and expand his impact all the way to the United Nations.

His journey is a reminder that rejection isn’t the end of the story. Sometimes, it’s just the beginning.

The 2019–2023 Nigeria National Youth Policy had great intentions and assigned responsibilities to over 40 ministries, departments and agencies. On paper, it looked solid.

But good policies don’t create impact, good implementation does.

Our latest gap analysis by NGYouthSDGs found some major issues: Responsibilities were shared across many institutions, but it wasn’t clear who should be held accountable when targets weren’t met. There were no clear consequences for poor performance or structured reporting systems to track progress.

Although monitoring and evaluation were included in the policy, there’s no public evidence that mid-cycle or end-cycle reviews ever took place.

Accountability isn’t about pointing fingers. It’s about making sure commitments to young people are followed through and results can be measured.

So here’s the question: How can future youth policies achieve meaningful impact if no single institution is clearly accountable for delivering results?

When ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI tools started gaining ground around late 2022, they didn’t just introduce new technology, they changed how people work, learn and earn.

But the 2019 National Youth Policy was written before all of that really took off. It talked about basic digital skills but it didn’t fully capture the shift we’re now living through: AI, remote work and the global creator economy.

The reality is that young Nigerians are already in this space, building careers and opportunities on global platforms. The problem is that the policy framework hasn’t caught up with them.

It often feels like we’re still being prepared for jobs that are fading, instead of the ones being created right now.
If the next National Youth Policy is going to be relevant, it has to look forward, not backward. It needs to understand AI, support digital workers and invest in the infrastructure that today’s economy actually runs on.

How do we move from a great idea to a fully funded, sustainable social project? It all comes down to resource mobilisation.

We are excited for today’s Youth Activators Lab (YAL) 2026 Cohort learning session. Our cohort is discussing the essentials of gathering the right tools, funding, and networks to drive real community change.

It’s easy to write inclusion in a policy.
It’s harder to actually make it work in reality.

The 2019–2023 National Youth Policy talked about including women, persons with disabilities and underserved youth but there was little to no proper tracking to see if that was really happening.

Even the 10% quota for persons with disabilities wasn’t properly enforced or monitored.

Inclusion shouldn’t just sound good on paper. If you can’t measure it, you can’t protect it.

We need better systems in the next policy, not just promises.

Last month, our Executive Director took the findings of the Beyond Awareness: Youth Participatory Research on Decent Work in Nigeria directly to young workers at the Young Workers Leadership Programme.

2,149 young Nigerians across all 36 states told us about their work experiences, rights violations, barriers to decent work, and what needs to change.

This session was about putting that evidence in the hands of the people it was made for.

We want our research to change lives.

Please send us a DM if you are working with young workers or run a community of young people so we can inform them of their rights.
