As we mark the 2026 International Day of the African Child under the theme, “Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa,” we are reminded that millions of children across Africa still lack access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
Through our work at OIOF, we have seen how inadequate WASH facilities adversely affect children's health, safety, school attendance, dignity, and overall well-being, particularly among those living in rural and underserved communities.
This Day of the African Child, we urge governments, institutions, communities, and development partners to invest, act, and remain accountable for the well-being of every African child. The promises made on paper must translate into lived experiences for every child in Africa through access to quality education, clean water, healthcare, protection, and equal opportunities.
