THE OCTOBER 1 DIALOGUE
Democracy is endangered without a credible and robust opposition. Like Lord Acton said, "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely". While the doctrine of separation of powers is supposed to help to curb the propensity for overstepping one's boundaries in man and safeguard a democratic practice, the presence of opposition in a polity helps keep the ruling party and the government on their toes thereby preventing the descent into dictatorship.
Walter Lippmann said, "In a democracy, the opposition is not only tolerated as constitutional, but must be maintained because it is indispensable."
The October 1 Dialogue is a gathering of Political Leaders across parties lines and other interested Nigerians (regardless of their political affiliation) to discuss this issue of opposition politics in Nigeria and create the pathway for a healthy democratic practice in our country.
