RECOLLECTING 12 YEARS AFTER THEIR ABDUCTION... "CHIBOK GIRLS"

"Although, our abduction was a traumatic experience, today we want the world to know that we are more than our fears. We represent the symbols of hope and resilience for women and girls with similar experience like us. And education has helped and shaped us in so many beautiful ways since our experience."

This is an excerpt from the collective statement by the Chibok Girls in remembrance of the 12th year of their abdction.

EVERY GIRL Initiative - EGi spent the past weekend leading on a collective convening of the "Chibok Girls" who are former abductees by insurgents - at the American University of Nigeria, in preparation of the 12th Year rememberance of their abduction.

The activity culminated with the development of statement that highlights their experience and journey over the years, with specific focus on the role of education in advancing that journey, and it's importance for the girl child.

"We are sending a plea and reminder for the world to invest in the education of women and girls for a more stable society, that gives all individuals the opportunity to fulfil their potential"

This activity is a phase one of a two part programme of psychosocial, team bonding, organizational and leadership development support for the girls - supported and funded by the Carthasis Art Foundation.

For the past months, we have been in Chibok engaging, training and building capacities on financial Literacy and business development skills for young women and girls, who were former abductees of insurgents from Chibok (AKA Chibok Girls).and are engaged in tailoring, fashion design and other basic livelihood activities. Through this intervention supported by the Carthasis Art Foundation (CAF ), we are laying a foundation for economic self sustenance, community durable actions and a more dignified life for girls who have been survivors of violent conflicts.

A key aspect of this intervention involves a strategic engagement with key community leaders, stakeholders and parents of the girls to mobilize for a comprehensive support for the girls, as well as to access gaps in capacity, knowledge and results.

HADIZA might just be one amongst our recent graduates from Sheroes Girls Science Academy. But beyond that, she is a powerful evidence that with the right nurturing, a carefully curtailed environment, and a tailored teaching method that focuses on building confidence and interest in science from an early age; girls can be set for a very empowering educational and Socio-Economic future. Thanks to the instrumentality of our Sheroes girls science academy.

THIS IS WHAT COLLECTIVE ACTION LOOKS LIKE!! Six Months Extended Maternity Leave is now a goal in Nasarawa State.

After years of advocacy, Nasarawa State Government on 31st March, has officially approved six months of paid maternity leave for female civil servants, and 14 working days of paid paternity leave for male employees (March, 31st).

Today, we celebrate real change, from a journey strongly backed by the Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN), to advance maternal and child health outcomes. A network where EVERY GIRL Initiative - EGi actively leads and engages in Nasarawa and Adamawa states.

Kudus to CSSUN, it partners, allies, supporters, and communities who refused to stay silent.

From Maiduguri to Jos - brutal violence and death, all within a month. How many more lives must be lost before action is taken? The attack in Angwan Rukuba is not just another headline, it is a tragedy that has left the state in mourning.

We stand in solidarity and extend our deepest condolences to the families affected. This cycle of violence must end, and we call on the Federal and State Government to rise to their responsibility in ensuring safety, justice, and lasting peace.

Following the expiration of the Joint Roadmap of the Call to Action for Northeast Nigeria (2022-2025), EVERY GIRL Initiative - EGi alongside other long-standing Call to Action partners in Adamawa came together in Yola to review the progress, challenges and lessons learnt from the Implementation of the Call to Action Northeast Nigeria Road Map 2022-2025; Critically discuss issues relevant to the key proposed Outcome as well as collectively develop a new multi-year Nigeria Call to Action Roadmap 2026-2030.

The session was anchored and coordinated by UNFPA Nigeria while reminding partners that THE CALL TO ACTION was designed to ensure that every humanitarian operation, from the very start, prevents GBV, provides safe and comprehensive services for those affected by GBV, and mitigates GBV risks, especially violence against women and girls.

The good news for the new roadmap is the planned extension of the call to action to North Central and North Western Nigeria.

This week we responded to the call of the women in Namtari community (Yola South LGA) to provide them an opportunity for an enhanced agency and capacity building - by partnering with the Adamawa State Agency for Adult Education to launch the Community Gender School of Women (C-GSW) as part of activity to celebrate the International Women's Day.

The (GCSW) is an integrated community adult learning class designed to empower adult women with no formal education with functional basic education classes, that integrates Literacy, Numeracy, as well as livelihood skills and sexual reproductive health classes - while also maintaining feminist principles and actions.

This programme was a response to the request by the community women and stakeholders who are participants of our community Assembly outreach under the Sang Pour Sang (Menstrual Health & Dignity -MHD) Project - for an enhanced opportunity to build their agency and capacity to make and act on life-defining decisions free from violence & coercion, with improved economic status challenging restrictive social norms, and an increased representation in decision-making at the community level.
