Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) marks World Hepatitis Day to raise awareness about hepatitis, particularly viral hepatitis B, which affects millions of people worldwide. Many individuals are living with hepatitis B without knowing they are infected.

To support early detection and prevention, Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH), Lafia, in collaboration with Getinomide and Getino-B (a manufacturer of hepatitis B medications), is currently offering free hepatitis B screening and vaccination.

From "Vaccine Hesitancy" to " Vaccine Trust"

One experience that has had a lasting impact on me involves one of my students, Muhammad, who comes from a nomadic Fulani community. Nomadic Fulani populations are among the groups that have historically experienced vaccine hesitancy and inequitable access to routine childhood immunization. This is often influenced by factors such as limited access to education and healthcare services, as well as low levels of trust in external health interventions.

Muhammad's story demonstrates how these barriers can be overcome. After gaining admission to the College of Health Sciences and Technology and receiving health education and professional training, he returned to his community with credible knowledge about immunization. Because he is a trusted member of the community who understands their language, culture, and values, people were willing to listen to him. His advocacy contributed to increased acceptance of routine childhood immunization within his community.

This experience reinforced my belief that improving vaccine acceptance is not only about providing vaccines but also about investing in people from underserved communities. Building the capacity of trusted local champions who can communicate effectively with their own communities is one of the most sustainable approaches to addressing vaccine hesitancy and improving immunization equity.

As a lecturer at a College of Health Sciences and Technology and the founder of Vaccine Hope Initiative Nigeria, I have observed that many Community Health students come from remote and underserved communities. Through capacity-building, mentorship, and evidence-based vaccine education, we equip these students to become trusted advocates for immunization in their respective communities. Empowering local health professionals who already have the trust of their people is central to our mission of increasing vaccine confidence and ensuring that no community is left behind.

A Friend's Battle, A Lesson for Us All: Hepatitis B Awareness Matters
Today, I am sharing this not only as an appeal for support but also as a public health wake-up call.
This is my course mate from Biochemistry department ABU, Zaria(2015 Set) Buhari Muhammad(Mai Nasara), who is currently battling liver cirrhosis, a life-threatening condition that has severely damaged his liver and now requires urgent medical intervention.
While not every case of liver cirrhosis is caused by Hepatitis B, chronic Hepatitis B infection remains one of the leading causes of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer worldwide. Sadly, many people live with Hepatitis B for years without knowing because the disease can remain silent until severe complications develop.
At Vaccine Hope Initiative, we believe stories like this remind us that prevention is far better, cheaper, and safer than treatment.
Our message is simple:
1. Know your Hepatitis B status through screening.
2. Get vaccinated if you are negative and unprotected.
3. Encourage your family members, friends, and communities to get tested.
4. Avoid sharing sharp objects and practice safe health behaviours.
Hepatitis B is preventable through safe and effective vaccination, yet many adults in Nigeria have never been screened or vaccinated.
As we raise awareness, we are also appealing to compassionate individuals, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers to support Buhari during this difficult period. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a difference in giving him another chance at life.
Let this be more than a fundraising appeal; let it be a reminder that early detection and vaccination save lives.

It was a privilege to witness the launch and unveiling of the first cohort of NAYFLI 2026 under the inspiring theme, "Rising to Lead." The event highlighted the importance of empowering young people with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to drive sustainable development and create meaningful impact in their communities.
At Vaccine Hope Initiative, one of our core objectives is capacity building for middle-cadre Community Health Workers and Public Health professionals, recognizing that a skilled and empowered workforce is essential for strengthening healthcare systems, improving vaccine uptake, and promoting community well-being.
The vision of NAYFLI aligns strongly with our commitment to developing future leaders who can champion positive change across various sectors. By investing in leadership development today, we are building a generation capable of addressing tomorrow's public health and societal challenges.
Looking ahead, we would be delighted to explore partnership opportunities with NAYFLI in advancing leadership development, health advocacy, community engagement, and capacity-building initiatives. Together, we can nurture young leaders who will not only inspire change but also contribute meaningfully to healthier and more resilient communities.
The future belongs to empowered young leaders, and collaboration remains key to unlocking their full potential.

Today, I had the privilege of attending the unveiling of the Imapoly Breast and Cervical Cancer Proactive Initiative (2025–2028) alongside key health stakeholders and government officials in Nasarawa State.
The discussions on breast cancer awareness, cervical cancer prevention, and early detection reinforced an important message: many cervical cancer cases can be prevented through timely screening and HPV vaccination.
As Founder of Vaccine Hope Initiative, I remain committed to promoting vaccine access, acceptance, and evidence-based health education, particularly on the HPV vaccine. Our mission aligns closely with efforts to reduce cervical cancer through awareness, advocacy, and community engagement.
A vaccine is more than a shot—it is hope, protection, and a healthier future for every girl child.

I just came across this post from a friend that she once watched a woman cry uncontrollably at the hospital after her sister’s late-stage cervical cancer diagnosis. She kept crying, saying that if somebody had told them there was a vaccine for cervical cancer, they would have gotten it. But it was already too late.

Ignorance is too expensive, and cervical cancer is one of the only cancers we can actually prevent with a simple shot. The HPV vaccine is that prevention.
