Yesterday’s International Women’s Day celebration organized by the Abuja Association of the Deaf Women Section was a huge success, and we return all glory to God for a peaceful, impactful, and memorable event.

The event brought together Deaf women, guests, partners, and supporters in an atmosphere of unity, learning, empowerment, and celebration. With the theme “Give to Gain”, participants were encouraged to embrace generosity, support one another, and invest in personal growth for a better future.

A major highlight of the celebration was the Give to Gain and mental health session and as well as self-reliance and entrepreneurship, where women were inspired to develop skills, start businesses, and become financially independent despite societal barriers. The session reminded everyone that women with disabilities are capable, talented, and valuable contributors to society when given equal opportunities and support.

We sincerely appreciate our sponsors, invited guests, members, volunteers, interpreters and everyone who contributed in one way or another to make the program successful and eventful. Your support, encouragement, and presence added great value to the celebration.

Together, we continue to promote inclusion, women empowerment, leadership, and equal opportunities for Deaf women in society.

The Executives and Members of the Abuja Association of the Deaf (AAD) deeply mourn the sudden passing of the former Women Leader of the Nigeria National Association of the Deaf (NNAD), Hajiya Amina Ahmed.

She was a woman of strength and a powerful voice, a jovial and motherly figure to many. Her warmth and friendliness were truly unmatched, and she had a unique way of lifting the spirits of those around her through her humor and kindness.

Her loss is deeply felt, and she will be greatly missed within the disability community and beyond.

May Allah comfort the family she left behind and granted them the fortune to bear the loss. 🤲

May her soul rest in perfect peace. 🕯🕯🕯

Dusting Off the Disability Desks: A Call to IGP Tunji Disu

Heartfelt Congratulations to our new "Sheriff," IGP Tunji Disu. Your reputation for "policing with a human face" gives us immense hope. We believe that under your watch, the Nigeria Police Force will truly become a force that protects every single citizen.

Permit me to bring to your notice a vital pillar of police reform that is currently being ignored: the Disability Desks in our police commands. While they exist on paper, they are currently "dead" in practice. We cannot allow the progress of the past to simply fade away.

These desks were no accident. They were born from the dedicated efforts of James Lalu (former Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), who partnered with former IGP Usman Alkali Baba in 2021 to establish them. The goal was simple: to ensure that Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) can access justice without fear, stigma, or physical barriers.

Sir, these desks are not an act of "charity"—they are a matter of National Security. PWDs are present in every corner of our communities. When they trust the police, they provide vital intelligence that helps apprehend suspects. If a person who is Deaf or a person with disabilities (PWDs) feels safe at a police station, they will provide eyewitness accounts of what they have observed. The NPF simply cannot secure Nigeria effectively while ignoring the 35 million Nigerians with disabilities.

Take a look at the NSCDC (Civil Defence); they already maintain active, functional disability desks. As the lead internal security agency, the Nigeria Police Force should not be lagging behind. It is time for the NPF to set the standard once again.

The Way Forward: A Four-Point Agenda

We call on Chief Gufwan Ayuba Ayuba Gufwan (current Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities- NCPWD, Nigeria ) and IGP Tunji Disu to collaborate on the following four points:

Open the Doors: Every command must have a functional, visible Disability Desk with clear signage.

Train the Officers: Desk officers must be sensitized to the Disability Act and trained in accessible communication, including basic sign language and patient engagement.

Active Monitoring: The NPF and NCPWD must conduct regular audits to ensure these desks are operational and not just symbolic.

Real Inclusion: Streamline the process for PWDs to report crimes, provide statements, and seek justice without physical or social hurdles.

Inclusive policing is a right, not a favor.

Sir, let’s bring back the Disability Desks and ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of ability, is seen, heard, and protected

Thank you.

Habiba Yusuf: The Proof that Inclusion is a Resource, Not a Favor

When inclusion meets opportunity, magic doesn't just happen—progress happens.

Look at Habiba Yusuf Osayi in this picture. She is Deaf Youth Corper who refused to sit on the sidelines. During the just-concluded FCT elections, Habiba didn't just watch from home, she stood tall as an INEC ad-hoc staff.

She performed her civic duty with seriousness. She proved that being Deaf is not a barrier to national service.

She showed that with the right support and a fair chance, PWDs are not just "beneficiaries" of the system—we are the engine of the system!

Now, it is time for the FCT to match her energy. Our community showed up. We voted. We served. We secured the integrity of the ballot.

We are calling on our Honourable Minister of the FCT, Barr. Nyesom Wike, to formalise what is long overdue:
WE NEED THE FCT AGENCY FOR PWDs NOW!

While the FCT waits, the rest of Nigeria moves, over 23 states have already established dedicated agencies for PWDs.

The Nigeria Disability Law mandates our inclusion in every policy, yet the capital city remains without a structural home for our affairs.

What will this Agency achieve?
✅ Economic Power: Enforce the 5% employment quota for PWDs in the FCTA.

✅ Universal Access: Ensure FCT’s world-class infrastructure, healthcare, and transport are truly accessible to everyone.

✅ Protection & Voice: Provide a legal and administrative shield for our rights.

Hon. Minister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike - CON, GSSRS sir, you are known as a leader who delivers results. You are a builder of cities. We ask you now to build a bridge for your citizens with disabilities. Let the establishment of the FCT Agency for Persons with Disabilities be your next landmark achievement.

Habiba Yusuf has shown the way. It’s time for the system to follow.
