STAYING AHEAD OF HIV. The Test That Changed Our Future.

When I met the man who would later become my husband, our relationship was growing stronger every day. We cared deeply for each other and were beginning to discuss a future together.
Before our relationship became intimate, I insisted that we both take an HIV test. At first, he was reluctant. He believed there was no reason to test because he had never had unprotected s*x and had always been careful with his life. Besides, he planned to use condoms whenever we became intimate because he wanted to protect himself from any possible risk.

I explained that HIV testing is not about distrust or assumptions. It is about knowing your status and making informed decisions. After several conversations, he finally agreed.
On the day we took the test, our lives changed.
My result was negative. His result came back positive.
The news was difficult for both of us, but it was also the beginning of hope. Because he tested early, he was immediately enrolled on treatment. We received counseling, education, and encouragement from healthcare professionals who helped us understand that HIV was not the end of his life or our dreams.
With time, his health improved, his viral load became suppressed, and our confidence grew. We decided to get married.

Today, ten years later, we are still happily married. I remain HIV-negative, and we are blessed with two beautiful children who are HIV-free. What could have been a tragic story became a story of hope because we chose to know our status early and act on the results.
HIV testing did not break our relationship—it strengthened it. Early diagnosis and treatment gave us the opportunity to plan our future, protect each other, and build the family we dreamed of.

The lesson is simple: HIV does not always look like what people expect. The only way to know your status is to get tested.
