Kenyan President William Ruto has publicly acknowledged the abuse of power by security forces following protests over alleged kidnappings and disappearances. In his New Year’s address, Ruto admitted to instances of “excessive and extrajudicial actions” by security personnel but provided no specifics. The protests, driven by youth anger over disappearances and violent repression in June and July, were met with heavy force by security personnel. Human rights activists have criticized the government for failing to investigate these cases.
