At Climate Resilience Action Group - CRAG we continue to engage and inspire young people through our Climate-health Awareness and Tree Planting Campaign.

As reported by the TVC, during our recent visit to Yusuf Bayero Secondary School, we sensitized students on climate-related health risks, the importance of positive behavior change, and the actions we can take individually and collectively to reduce the health impacts of climate change.

Through our ongoing CRAG pilot project, we have so far:

*Visited 6 public schools across 3 different districts in Kano State, Nigeria.

* Sensitized and enlightened 300 students on climate-health risks and resilience measures.

*Planted 120 tree seedlings (20 in each school visited) and

*Assigned 120 Climate-health Student Ambassadors (one for each tree planted), who are being mentored and encouraged to nurture the trees and educate their peers on climate-health issues.

We believe that building climate resilience starts with empowering communities and investing in young people as agents of change.

Let us put our hands together to nurture a generation that is informed, engaged, and committed to creating healthier and more resilient communities.

We are open to collaborations, Partnerships, and networking to expand this initiative and maximize it's impact.

Medical Experts Sensitise Students On Health Risks ...

We are successfully implementing the Climate Resilience Action Group - CRAG Climate-health Pilot Projects including

1. Climate-health and Training for Frontline Health Workers in rural communities and

2. Climate-health Awareness and tree planting campaign in public secondary schools incorporated with the CRAG Students' Climate-health ambassadors initiative.

Ongoing Implementation of CRAG Pilot Projects

At KIRCT Climate Resilience Action Group - CRAG (CRAG), we are not only conducting climate-health awareness and training campaigns, we are also integrating the awareness with practical community-driven environmental actions aimed at promoting climate , environmental , and healthier communities.

One of the most inspiring aspects of this initiative is the introduction of the CRAG Climate Ambassadors Program, where each planted tree is assigned to a student ambassador, creating 20 Ambassadors within the school. These students will be mentored and encouraged to nurture and protect the trees, promoting long-term environmental stewardship, youth leadership, and active participation in climate action.

Today, (May 3rd 2026), the Climate Resilience Action Group - CRAG Kano Independent Research Centre Trust successfully delivered a one hour live radio awareness program at AREWA RADIO 93.1 FM Kano focused on the health risks of extreme heat exposure and practical ways people and communities can stay safe during the current heatwave. The team was represented by Dr. Basheer Isah Waziri (MBBS, M.Sc, Ph.D), Ummul-Khair Muhammad Kabir and Dr. Maryam Ahmad Said

The timing could not be more critical as millions of people across Kano State, and other parts of Nigeria, are currently experiencing dangerous heat waves with temperatures reaching 43°C today, with forecasts of up to 44°C on Monday and Tuesday. Under conditions like this, the risks of dehydration, heat stress, worsening chronic illnesses, reduced productivity, and severe health emergencies rise significantly.

Importantly, the program was delivered in Hausa language, the widely spoken local language across Kano and much of Northern Nigeria, where extreme heat impacts are among the most severe ensuring that vital climate–health information reaches communities in a language they understand.

Using the radio station as the program platform enabled life-saving climate–health information to reach grassroots communities who may have limited access to social media but rely heavily on radio as a trusted source of news and education. Through this platform, we are able to reach millions of listeners, including rural households, traders, farmers, transport workers, and families most exposed to extreme heat.

Key Take-Home Messages & Health Tips Shared with Listeners include:

1. Drink water regularly to avoid dehydration
2. Reduce unnecessary exposure during peak heat hours
3. Pay special attention to children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with existing illnesses
4. Stay in cool, shaded, and well-ventilated places whenever possible
5. Wear light clothing and rest when feeling weak
6. Protect trees, keep surroundings clean, and support community environmental action
7. Seek medical help early in case of persistent headache, dizziness, severe weakness or exhaustion, confusion or fainting.

This is what climate resilience looks like in practice: meeting people where they are, talking to them in the best way they understand, and turnig science into action that protects health.

At CRAG, we believe that effective climate action must be inclusive, community-driven, and accessible to all.

A Landmark Partnership for Climate & Health Action in Nigeria

We are delighted to share highlights from Climate Resilience Action Group - CRAG successful Partnership Engagement with the Climate Emerge Innovation Development Hub Hub during their visit to Kano Independent Research Centre Trust from 21st to 24 April 2026.

As part of the visit, a strategic engagement meeting was held between the CRAG, CEID Hub and KIRCT Management to discuss agreed areas of collaboration focused on , , and . The discussions were highly productive, setting the stage for impactful joint initiatives.

A major milestone of the visit was the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between KIRCT–CRAG and CEID Hub team. The MoU was signed by the Director General, KIRCT Professor Hamisu Mohammed Salihu (MD Ph.D) and the CEO, CEID Hub, Sope Afolayan in the presence of distinguished members from both organizations, including Dr. Basheer Isah Waziri (CRAG Team Lead), Barrister Naziru B. Ibrahim, Dr. Hassan Adam Murtala, Ummul-Khair Muhammad Kabir, Dr. Aisha Adam and Halima Ahmed from the CRAG team, AND Elizabeth Omotayo and Israel ALABI from the CEID Hub Team

One of the key joint projects under this partnership is the Intelligent Waste Management Initiative, a transformative, zero-waste approach aimed at:

-Reducing improper waste disposal (a key driver of flooding and extreme heat),
-Converting waste into valuable resources
-Creating economic opportunities and empowering young people

This partnership will also drive additional initiatives, including:
-Community-based tree planting campaigns
-Climate-health awareness and resilience programs and
-Sustainable environmental interventions

Together, we are building practical, scalable solutions that protect health, strengthen communities, and promote environmental sustainability.

What began as a simple conversation during a refreshment break at Climate Action Week 2026 in Maldives has now evolved into a transformative partnership for climate–health action in Nigeria.
