WAQF: THE SOLUTION TO THE CHALLENGE OF SCHOOL FEES AND THE BREAKDOWN OF FAMILY EDUCATION
By: Abbas Adam Abba
Chairman, Alburhan Waqf Initiative, Kano
Tel: +2348038569777
Email: [email protected]
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Allah(swt), the Most High, says:
«"Never will you attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love. And whatever you spend, indeed Allah is Knowing of it."
(Qur'an 3:92)»
This verse inspired Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) when he acquired a valuable piece of land in Khaybar. He went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking advice on the best way to utilize it. The Prophet (SAW) said:
«"Retain the original property and dedicate its benefits as charity."
(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)»
From this guidance emerged the institution of Waqf (Islamic Endowment), which continues to feed the poor and the needy, while financing mosques, hospitals, and educational institutions in different parts of the world.
Let us now reflect on the situation facing many families today.
Every year, as the month of August approaches, countless families across Nigeria experience a familiar season of anxiety.
Not because of illness.
Not because of hunger.
But because of SCHOOL FEES.
One day, a father returned home from work or his business. He found his children excited because they had completed the previous academic session and were looking forward to resuming in a new class.
But his own heart was filled with worry.
His wife handed him a pile of bills:
- School fees
- Registration fees
- Uniforms
- Books
- Exercise books
- School sandals
- Transportation
- NECO examination fees
- WAEC examination fees
- JAMB registration fees
- TAHFIZ graduation expenses.
He remained silent.
While the children celebrated with excitement, tears filled their father's eyes.
At this time of the year, many parents begin to experience severe stress, and some even suffer from high blood pressure because they simply do not know how they will pay these educational expenses. The Daily Trust newspaper of 1 August 2026 highlighted how the rising cost of education is placing enormous pressure on Nigerian families.
An Important Question:
1,What happens if this father dies?
2,What if he retires?
3,What if his business collapses?
4,What if he loses his job?
In many cases, the consequences are heartbreaking:
- Children are forced to drop out of school.
- Some cannot afford to sit for WAEC or NECO examinations.
- Others lose the opportunity to enter university because they cannot pay admission or registration fees.
- The educational dreams of the entire family collapse within a very short time.
Sadly, even in wealthy families, once the breadwinner dies, many children discontinue their education within one or two years because there is no sustainable financial system to support them.(I am an eye witness because of being a school proprietor for decades).
Is There a Solution?
YES.
The solution is Education Waqf (Educational Endowment).
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
«"When a person dies, all his deeds come to an end except three: ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him."
(Sahih Muslim)»
Reflect carefully upon this hadith.
Education Waqf combines two of these three lasting rewards at the same time: ongoing charity through Waqf and beneficial knowledge through education.
Therefore, establishing a Waqf to support children's education is among the greatest investments for continuous reward after death.
How Can Family Education Waqf Solve This Problem?
Imagine if every family, while still financially stable, sets aside 5% to 10% of its wealth or income to establish a Family Education Waqf.
The fund would then be invested only in Shariah-compliant investments.
The investment returns could permanently finance:
- School fees
- Books
- Uniforms
- WAEC fees
- NECO fees
- JAMB registration
- University admission expenses
- TAHFIZ education
- Islamic school fees
- University tuition... etc.
Even if the father dies...
Even if he retires...
Even if the family's business fails...
The children's education will continue uninterrupted.
Schools Can Also Establish Education Waqf.
Both conventional and Tahfiz schools can establish their own Education Waqf Fund.
The Waqf assets may include:
- Agricultural farms
- Commercial shops
- Orchards
- Shariah-compliant investment portfolios
The income generated from these Waqf assets can be used to:
- Reduce school fees
- Sponsor orphaned students
- Assist underprivileged students
- Pay teachers' salaries
- Construct additional classrooms
- Provide books and educational materials
- Pay WAEC, NECO and JAMB fees for deserving students
- Sponsor Tahfiz graduation ceremonies
This enables schools to rely increasingly on sustainable investment income instead of constantly increasing school fees.
This Is What Islamic History Demonstrates
For centuries, many Muslim schools and universities flourished because of the Waqf system.
Students pursued education with peace of mind because Waqf institutions financed their learning—from primary education to university..and Tahfiz graduation.
The Time Has Come
The time has come for families to stop leaving their children's education dependent solely on one person's monthly salary or business.
The time has come for schools to stop relying only on increasing school fees.(as major source of income).
The time has come to establish Education Waqf.
So that education will not die because the breadwinner dies.
So that children's dreams will not be destroyed by poverty.
So that every family leaves behind an educational legacy more valuable than houses and cars, etc.
Education Waqf is a legacy that continues educating children, paying their educational expenses, supporting teachers, and earning continuous rewards for its founder long after he or she has returned to Allah.
May Allah make us among those who establish Waqf to safeguard the education of our communities and secure the future of our children.
Ameen.

LEGAL AID WAQF: An Innovative Approach to Protecting the Vulnerable.
By: Abbas Adam Abba
Chairman, Alburhan Waqf Initiative, Kano
Tel: +2348038569777
Email: [email protected]
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
One day, a young Muslim man came to a lawyer in tears. It was not because he had committed a crime, but because he had been imprisoned over a debt that was insignificant compared to the value of his life and dignity. Due to this small debt, he was detained, his family fell into hardship, his children stopped attending school, and his wife was left without support.
He said to the lawyer:
"Sir, I know I am in the right, but I do not have the money to pay for someone to defend me."
In another town, a man embraced Islam after years of sincere research and searching for the truth. When his relatives discovered that he had become a Muslim, they expelled him from the family home, cut off his means of livelihood, and denied him access to the family's wealth. In some places, such people are even taken to court or falsely accused and imprisoned by relatives or members of their former religion. They are told:
"If you want to be released, abandon Islam."
In situations like these, a compassionate Muslim lawyer may step forward to defend their rights. But an important question arises: Can a lawyer continue to provide free legal services while also paying bail expenses, court fees, transportation costs, and even supporting the family of the detained person from his own pocket indefinitely?
The answer is NO.
A lawyer also has a family to support and financial responsibilities to fulfill.
For this reason, the time has come for the Muslim community—especially Muslim lawyers—to consider establishing a Legal Aid Waqf dedicated to supporting vulnerable people in legal matters.
Under such a Waqf:
- Waqf donations would be collected from wealthy individuals and the wider Muslim community.
- The Waqf capital would be invested only in Shariah-compliant and productive investments to generate sustainable income.
- The investment returns would be used to cover legal expenses for deserving individuals who cannot afford representation.
- It would support new Muslims (reverts) who suffer economic persecution because of accepting Islam.
- It would assist with lawful bail-related expenses, court fees, and other legitimate legal costs permitted by the law.
- It would also help provide financial support for the families of those who are unjustly detained while seeking justice.
With such a system in place, lawyers would be able to concentrate on defending the rights of the oppressed, while the Waqf would shoulder the financial burden necessary to make justice accessible.
This is not a new concept. Throughout Islamic history, Waqf institutions financed education, healthcare, orphan care, assistance for travelers, and numerous charitable services. Why should we not revive this great institution today to protect the legal rights of vulnerable members of society?
By establishing a Legal Aid Waqf, we would not merely be helping one individual. Rather, we would be building a sustainable institution that protects justice, supports the vulnerable, strengthens the confidence of new Muslims, and ensures that poverty never becomes a barrier to obtaining justice.
Justice requires those who defend it. But those who defend justice also need a sustainable system that supports them. Waqf is one of the greatest institutions that Islam has provided to achieve this noble objective.
May Allah make us among those who stand for truth and justice, and may He accept this effort as a lasting Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity). Allah swt says in Quran:cooperate with one another in righteousness and piety.... Quran surah 5 Aya 2,And also prophet Muhammad (SAW)says: Allah continues to help his servant as long servant continues to help his brother..may Allah swt accepts our deed, Ameen.

SATAN'S MISCONCEPTIONS THAT PREVENT US FROM IMPLEMENTING FAMILY WAQF
By: Abbas Adam Abba
Chairman, Alburhan Waqf Initiative, Kano
Email: [email protected]
Tel: +2348038569777
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Below are some of the temptations and misconceptions that Satan uses to discourage people from establishing or participating in Family Waqf (and other forms of Waqf), together with their responses.
1. "There is no trust anymore."
Response: The dishonesty of some people is not a valid reason to abandon a righteous deed. A Waqf should be established with sound legal documentation, trustworthy trustees, and a transparent system of accountability.
2. "The family will fight over it."
Response: If the Waqf deed is clearly written and its objectives are well defined, disputes can be greatly minimized. (Besides, even families that do not establish a Family Waqf often experience inheritance disputes.?)
3. "I do not have enough wealth."
Response: Waqf is not only for the wealthy. A small house, a piece of land, a shop, or even modest capital can be dedicated as Waqf.
4. "I will do it when I become old."
Response: Death has no appointed age. It is better to establish your Waqf while you are healthy and capable.
5. "My children will lose their inheritance."
Response: A properly structured Waqf, established according to the principles of Islamic law, does not invalidate or abolish the Islamic law of inheritance.
6. "This is not our family tradition."
Response: Our evidence comes from the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the practices of the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), not merely from family customs.
7. "Waqf is only for building mosques."
Response: No. A Family Waqf may support children, education, healthcare, widows, orphans, and many other charitable causes.
8. "It will reduce my wealth."
Response: Waqf preserves the original asset while only its benefits or income are spent for charitable purposes. Moreover, Allah places blessings (barakah) in wealth that is spent sincerely for His sake.
9. "The process is too complicated."
Response: With the assistance of qualified scholars and legal experts, establishing a Waqf is straightforward.
10. "No one will continue it after my death."
Response: This is precisely why trustworthy trustees should be appointed and written regulations prepared to ensure the Waqf continues after the founder's death.
11. "Just give your children Islamic education, good upbringing, rely on Allah, and make du'a."
Response: We certainly do not understand Islam better than the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him). They educated their children, gave them good moral training, relied upon Allah, and made abundant supplications. Yet history confirms that nearly every Companion who lived long enough established a Waqf.
12. "There is still plenty of time. I will establish it later, In shā' Allāh."
Response: No. Good deeds should not be delayed. Allah says:
"And hasten toward forgiveness from your Lord and a Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who are mindful of Allah."
(Qur'an 3:133).
13. "I will simply leave it as a will (Wasiyyah)."
Response: Yes, making a bequest for a Family Waqf is permissible. However, in our present time, many wills face practical difficulties and are sometimes not implemented. Therefore, it is better to establish the Waqf during your lifetime, while you are healthy and fully capable, and clearly inform your family that the Waqf property is no longer part of the estate to be inherited after your death.
LESSON:
Satan seeks to prevent people from establishing lasting charity by filling their hearts with fear, doubt, and procrastination. Allah says:
"Satan threatens you with poverty and commands you to immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing."
(Qur'an 2:268).
Therefore, every believer should put his trust in Allah, establish a sound plan, make sincere supplication, and implement a Family Waqf in order to earn continuous reward (Sadaqah Jariyah) and create a lasting source of benefit.
May Allah (SWT) grant us the ability to revive and implement the Sunnah of Family Waqf while we are still alive, healthy, and able. Āmīn.
Please do not stop at merely reading this article. Put it into practice before Satan returns to discourage you once again.
