A Historic Day for Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture
On November 20th, the Mata Iyayen Al’umma Foundation held a landmark Stakeholders Consultative Meeting in Kano State, a day that will forever stand as a milestone in our journey toward empowering grassroots women in agriculture.
We were honored to host an inspiring gathering of representatives from various government ministries, traditional institution, NGOs, CBOs, CSOs, women's groups, and valued partners. The collective commitment in that room reaffirmed our belief: when we unite with purpose, transformational change is possible.
📈 From Humble Beginnings to National Impact
Our story began in 2002 as a small self-help group of 10 women in Rangaza, Kano. Today, with federal accreditat ion and recent recognition by GIZ - SEDIN as one of the National Women’s Mentorship Network working to ensure that women scale in their businesses across Nigeria.
The meeting launched our flagship initiative:
Promoting Grassroots Women in Agriculture in Nigeria (PROgWAN), a project designed to empower women farmers across the value-chain through capacity building training in modern farming practices, access to finance and market network.
· Pilot phase: Empower 1000 women farmers across Kano, Niger, Gombe, Abia, Cross river and Oyo states through cooperative groups.
· Vision: To reach 1 million women farmers across Nigeria over the duration of 5 years.
· Focus Crops: Horticulture, rice, maize, soya bean, cow pea, groundnuts, sesame, cassava, and ginger.
· Aligned with SDGs: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Gender Equity, and Affordable Clean Energy.
