PROgWAN LAUNCH & TRAINING COMMENCEMENT

A historic moment for women in agriculture! We were deeply honoured to host the revered Emir of Kano, Khalifa (Dr) Muhammadu Sanusi II, CON, represented by the Sarkin Fadan Kano, Mallam Ado Kurawa, at the official launch of our program, Promoting Grassroot Women in Agriculture in Nigeria (PROgWAN) pilot phase training for 200 small holder women farmers in Kano State.

In his powerful address, the Emir emphasised that “supporting small holder women farmers is critical to boosting food production and improving livelihoods at the grassroots level.” His royal endorsement strengthens our resolve and highlights the vital role women play in feeding our nation.

This pilot marks the first tangible step toward our bold vision of empowering ONE MILLION WOMEN FARMERS across Nigeria. The selected beneficiaries, including smallholders and widows are now undergoing a three-day intensive training combining theory and practical fieldwork in horticulture, maize and rice.

We are grateful for the strong partnership and presence of the Kano State Government, represented by:

-Hajia Amina Sani Abdullahi, Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children, and Persons with Special Needs
- Dr. Farouk Kurawa, Managing Director, Kano State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KNARDA), represented by the Director admin and general services, Hajia Bilkisu Khalil.

Their commitment ensures this initiative aligns with and amplifies the state’s efforts in sustainable agriculture and women’s economic empowerment.

As our Founder, Hajia Farida Ahmed Tahir, stated, “PROgWAN is designed to dismantle the barriers of limited modern technical knowledge, capital and market access that have held back women farmers for too long.”

To our first cohort of 200 amazing women: This is your time. Learn, grow, and become the change agents in your communities. We are behind you all the way, with training, inputs, and continued support.

This is only the beginning. Follow our journey as we scale from Kano across Nigeria.

A Historic Day for Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture

On November 20th, the Mata Iyayen Al’umma Foundation held a landmark Stakeholders Consultative Meeting in Kano State, a day that will forever stand as a milestone in our journey toward empowering grassroots women in agriculture.

We were honored to host an inspiring gathering of representatives from various government ministries, traditional institution, NGOs, CBOs, CSOs, women's groups, and valued partners. The collective commitment in that room reaffirmed our belief: when we unite with purpose, transformational change is possible.

📈 From Humble Beginnings to National Impact

Our story began in 2002 as a small self-help group of 10 women in Rangaza, Kano. Today, with federal accreditat ion and recent recognition by GIZ - SEDIN as one of the National Women’s Mentorship Network working to ensure that women scale in their businesses across Nigeria.

The meeting launched our flagship initiative:
Promoting Grassroots Women in Agriculture in Nigeria (PROgWAN), a project designed to empower women farmers across the value-chain through capacity building training in modern farming practices, access to finance and market network.

· Pilot phase: Empower 1000 women farmers across Kano, Niger, Gombe, Abia, Cross river and Oyo states through cooperative groups.
· Vision: To reach 1 million women farmers across Nigeria over the duration of 5 years.
· Focus Crops: Horticulture, rice, maize, soya bean, cow pea, groundnuts, sesame, cassava, and ginger.
· Aligned with SDGs: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Gender Equity, and Affordable Clean Energy.

💬 Voices That Shaped the Dialogue

The discussions were heartfelt and solution-driven as critical challenges where discussed.

🤝 A Call to Continued Partnership

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to this historic dialogue. The work continues, and we invite all allies to join us in sowing the seeds of sustainable change.

Together, let’s ensure that the women who feed our nation are also the women who lead its growth.
